What is a Drafting Supervisor?
Central Hudson’s Drafting Supervisor manages and oversees the daily work for a team of classified Engineering Drafters and Engineering Files Clerical Assistants. The Supervisor also oversees the hiring, development, training and progression of the classified team reporting to them. The Drafting Supervisor works closely with the Managers, Directors and Section Leaders of Enterprise Work & Asset Management (EWAM) and Electric and Gas Engineering to plan and support the development and distribution of any required design prints for the various capital projects identified in the 5-year forecast as well as any unplanned emergent work. The Drafting Supervisor works with Engineering to coordinate and support the use of Consultant Engineering/Drafting firms when specialized engineering services are required, or peak workloads exceed the capabilities of internal staffing. The Drafting Supervisor handles contract administration tasks for contractual drafting services and for the maintenance/lease contracts for the company’s wide format printing equipment.
What does a Drafting Supervisor do?
Provides supervision and technical leadership to all employees involved in centralized corporate drafting activities, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, coordinating and performance measurements to ensure the timely, accurate completion of drafting work
Oversees maintenance of engineering records, maps, drawings and software systems associated with the Company’s electric, gas and common facilities
Develops, updates and implements drafting recording standards; supervises the training of drafters
Seeks out, evaluates and implements new systems and techniques for achieving maximum effectiveness of the Drafting organization
Supports any initiatives involving the company’s engineering records and applications
Maintains a working partnership with the engineering and operations areas of the Company to ensure that the Drafting organization is responsive to their needs
Provides support for storm restoration efforts
What does it take to be a Drafting Supervisor?
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering, Drafting/Design or other design/technical related field with prior experience in a technical Supervisory, Engineering, or Engineering Drafting role. In lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an associate’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Civil Engineering, Drafting/Design or other design/technical related field and 3 years of experience in a technical Supervisory, Engineering or Engineering Drafting role or a high school diploma or equivalency degree and 5 years of experience in a technical Supervisory, Engineering, or Engineering Drafting role will be considered
Detail oriented and able to review complex electric and gas print packages for consistency, accuracy and application of design and drafting standards
General understanding of the concepts surrounding electric and gas production, transmission, distribution and delivery
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly
Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast-paced work environment
Excellent written/verbal communication skills
Strong analytical, organizational and quantitative skills
A focus on safety, ensuring employee tasks are performed safely, per company safe practice guidelines.
Valid driver’s license
Preferred:
5 years of work experience in a technical Supervisory, Engineering, or Engineering Drafting role
Prior electrical system design engineering experience
Work, project and/or budget management experience
Autodesk, AutoCAD or other CAD based software experience
