This Scientist leads downstream process development and technology enablement using Thermo Fisher’s single-use purification platforms. This role advances our mission of evidence generation, customer training, and process innovation working to accelerate customer adoption and operational excellence.
Acting as a technical liaison for customers, R&D, and manufacturing, this position develops scalable, data-driven purification strategies for recombinant proteins and novel modalities. This role drives internal capability-building through structured training, workshops, and mentorship — ensuring Thermo Fisher teams and customers alike can expertly implement guidelines in single-use chromatography and filtration systems.
Location:
This is an onsite position in Plainville, Massachusetts. Residency within commuting distance is required. No relocation assistance will be provided.
Design and implement purification process development studies across capture, intermediate, and polishing operations.
Generate high-quality datasets demonstrating system performance, reproducibility, and scalability across Thermo Fisher’s downstream single-use platforms (e.g., Dyna Chrom™, Dyna Spin™). Develop and publish robust technical data packages supporting customer confidence and commercial product claims.
Collaborate with global R&D and product management teams to translate customer use cases into platform enhancements and application notes.
Lead hands-on customer training and technology demonstrations focused on chromatography, filtration, and process analytics.
Deliver engaging training that accelerates adoption of Thermo Fisher’s purification technologies.
Partner with field and commercial teams to implement customer workshops and data-driven showcases that highlight process performance and reliability.
Conduct structured internal workshops and technical upskilling sessions to embed downstream process knowledge within Thermo Fisher teams.
Mentor emerging scientists and engineers in purification process design, experimental planning, and data analysis.
Codify downstream guidelines and lessons learned into SOPs, templates, and internal knowledge libraries.
Partner with upstream, automation, and analytical colleagues to integrate end-to-end single-use workflows within the BDC.
Contribute to continuous improvement of purification process automation, data acquisition, and control systems.
Find opportunities to standardize downstream workflows across customer applications to improve scalability, reproducibility, and time-to-validation.
B.S in Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or related field with ≥5 years of meaningful experience; M.S. with ≥3 years; or PhD
Proven experience developing, optimizing, and transferring recombinant protein purification processes (chromatography, UF/DF, process characterization).
Demonstrated proficiency in downstream single-use system implementation and process solving.
Familiarity with data capture, process automation, and integration of analytics for process insight.
Advanced knowledge of downstream bioprocess operations and system integration.
Demonstrated ability to generate technical evidence supporting process robustness and product claims.
Skilled communicator with experience delivering customer trainings and technical presentations.
Ability to design and complete sophisticated experimental plans aligned with measurable metrics.
Strong collaboration skills and comfort operating within a global, matrixed organization.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range estimated for this position based in Massachusetts is $96,000.00–$127,000.00.This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy.
