AstraZeneca

Director Sustainability Programme Management

UK - Macclesfield Full time

Introduction to role

This role leads enterprise-wide sustainability programmes that transform performance and embed sustainability into everyday decisions and operations. Acting as the central PMO for sustainability initiatives, it sets the framework to manage and monitor a diverse portfolio of projects, ensuring timely delivery, robust measurement of quantitative and qualitative benefits, and clear links between business KPIs and sustainability KPIs. By connecting teams, managing risk, and driving innovation, this position helps bring the whole organisation onto the sustainability journey, rather than limiting it to specialist teams.

Accountabilities

In this role, you will oversee sustainability monitoring and reporting for Green Logistics, collecting data and metrics in line with reporting standards, benchmarking against industry peers, and managing key performance indicators that are regularly communicated to senior leadership. You will identify and manage programme-level risks on behalf of GLF and take accountability for decision making in risk management processes.

You will run the project management office for sustainability, planning and coordinating the portfolio of initiatives, reviewing progress, tracking results and ensuring cross-functional governance. Using recognised project management frameworks, you will drive delivery of agreed outcomes on budget, on time and to the required quality, while monitoring and evaluating programme effectiveness and recommending changes to close strategic gaps.

You will anticipate regulatory trends in sustainability and their implications for logistics and distribution, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. This includes assessing risk management, enacting internal policies and establishing robust processes that keep GLF ahead of evolving expectations.

You will manage collaborator relationships by promoting ongoing dialogue with internal and external partners, including SLT, suppliers and communities, to build constructive, transparent relationships. You will provide clear recommendations that advise decision making and demonstrate GLF’s commitment to responsible practices.

You will build organisational capabilities by identifying skills gaps and leading educational initiatives or sourcing missing expertise. You will establish standard processes, procedures, templates, and guidelines for all project types. You will also build frameworks for measuring and verifying emissions and waste reduction projects. Additionally, you will identify innovative ways to scale new capabilities across the organisation.

You will foster cultural change by helping define and communicate a compelling purpose that drives transformation. Acting as a sustainability representative into other transformational activities, you will champion mindset shifts based on concrete behaviours, support education across the organisation and establish routines that reinforce a credible “walk the talk” from leaders.

You will scout and experiment with emerging sustainability technologies, solutions and practices, promoting openness to the external innovation ecosystem. You will test applicability through pilots, learn from experiments and scale successful approaches to reduce environmental impact and boost efficiency.

You will embed sustainability into processes and decision making by revising key processes, criteria, metrics and tools, coaching decision makers to manage complex trade-offs. How can we make sustainability a natural part of every strategic choice? This role turns that question into practical action!
