The Opportunity

We are seeking a seasoned and experienced Portfolio Manager to join our growing Structured Credit team within Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP).

The OTPP Credit team is composed of approximately 45 investment professionals who invest across the full spectrum of credit products and strategies. The team employs a wide range of investment styles and skill sets, including deep fundamental analysis (public and private), enhanced indexing, quantitative strategies, external fund management, and structured credit investing.

As one of the key strategic growth areas within the Credit platform, the Structured Credit team operates under a flexible and value-driven mandate to invest across the capital structure of portfolios backed by various credit assets. Leveraging specialized product knowledge, the team performs fundamental, quantitative, and structural underwriting with the goal of delivering scalable, innovative, and superior risk-adjusted returns for the Fund.

The Structured Credit team manages four main business lines:

  • Collateralized Loan Obligations (CLO)
  • Significant Risk Transfer (SRT)
  • Asset-Backed Financing (ABF)
  • Opportunistic Convex Strategies

Reporting to the Head of Structured Credit, the Director will play an integral role in expanding and enhancing OTPP’s capabilities and capacity in the ABF business, while also providing support and cross-coverage to other Structured Credit business lines, such as CLO and SRT.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working closely and collaboratively with the other strategy lead / co-portfolio manager, collectively plan, direct, and oversee the Asset-Backed Financing (ABF) business line to achieve targeted growth and performance.

  • Originate, evaluate, and execute differentiated investment opportunities in ABF markets, including mortgages, consumer credit, and other asset-backed instruments.

  • Lead end-to-end transaction management, including deal sourcing, underwriting, structuring, negotiation, and closing.

  • Develop, enhance and implement investment strategies, policies, processes, and models to strengthen our ABF analytical and underwriting frameworks.

  • Monitor and evaluate portfolio performance, ensuring alignment with internal risk management and return expectations.

  • Build and strengthen strategic relationships with external partners such as originators, co-investors, and financing providers

  • Enhance the organization’s visibility and reputation as a partner of choice within the structured credit market.

  • Mentor our junior investment staff, providing guidance, knowledge transfer, and professional development support.

  • Provide support and cross coverage to other structured credit business lines such as SRT & CLO, as required.

  • Support the Head of Structured Credit on special situation projects or strategic transactions that are multidisciplinary in nature

  • Promote a high-performing, inclusive, and collaborative team culture aligned with corporate values and strategic priorities.

Required Skills:

  • Senior professional (10+ years of relevant experience), with substantive direct investing and risk-taking experience and expertise in Asset-Backed Financing.
  • Deep expertise and specialization in one or more ABF sub-asset classes including residential mortgages (i.e., non-QM, RTL, RPL, 2nd Lien, HELOC), and consumer credit (i.e., credit cards, auto, student, consumer loans).
  • Must demonstrate strong quantitative, analytical, and financial modeling skills and a data-driven mindset. Must be able and willing to perform hands-on and in-depth quantitative modeling and data analysis.
  • Must have substantial experience and proven ability to manage the full transaction lifecycle, from conducting commercial negotiations, due diligence, to legal documentation and deal closing.
  • Experience and expertise in negotiating financing arrangements (such as warehouse financing facilities) and structuring securitizations.
  • Collaborative, high-integrity team player with excellent communication skills.

Required Education:

  • Undergraduate Degree or Masters Degree in Economics, Commerce, Finance or Business Administration
