Rocket Loans is a fast-moving fintech built on the belief that personal lending should be simple, transparent, and fast. We're part of the Rocket Companies family — which means we have access to proven infrastructure and the culture of a smaller, focused organization. Our product, engineering, and design team is ~70 people strong, and we're building the infrastructure and experiences that define what modern consumer lending looks like.
Quality engineering as a practice here is in its early stages. We don't have a mature QA culture, a standardized tooling stack, or a defined testing philosophy. Leadership recognizes that and is committed to changing it. This role exists because we're ready to invest — and we need the right person to build it.
About the role
This is a builder role. You'll be establishing the quality practice, the culture, and the standard at Rocket Loans — with leadership backing to make a real difference.
We're looking for a Director of Quality Engineering to own quality across our entire software delivery lifecycle — from product conception through production, across origination, checkout, and servicing.
This is a player-coach role. You'll manage and grow a small team of quality engineers while staying technically hands-on yourself. You'll earn authority by doing the work first — defining our QA philosophy, architecting our testing practice, and pushing us toward the frontier of what quality engineering can look like with modern AI and agentic tooling.
You'll partner closely with engineering, product, and data leaders to shift quality left — embedding it earlier in how we build, not bolting it on at the end.
Rocket Loans has been building for a while. Now that we've proven ourselves, we're investing in growing into a mature engineering org. The right person is excited about owning that journey — not just managing it.
What You'll Own
Quality Strategy & Culture
Build Rocket Loans' quality practice from the ground up — strategy, tooling, culture, and execution
Shift quality left — embed QA thinking earlier in the product lifecycle, not just at the gate
Be the voice of quality in cross-functional planning, sprint reviews, and architectural decisions
Manage, mentor, and grow a team of QEs across all product pillars
Manual & Exploratory Testing
Lead structured manual testing efforts for complex, high-stakes flows (loan applications, decisioning, servicing)
Build test plans, exploratory charters, and risk-based testing frameworks that complement automation coverage requirements
Test Automation
Architect and maintain a scalable automation suite across UI, API, and integration layers
Own CI/CD quality gates — defining what must pass before code ships
Drive coverage metrics and reduce regression burden without sacrificing speed
Agentic & AI-Native Quality
Design evaluation frameworks for AI-powered features and agentic workflows — including LLM output quality, tool-use correctness, and multi-step reasoning validation
Stay ahead of the curve on emerging QA tooling and bring relevant practices in-house
Partner with engineering on prompt reliability, edge case coverage, and production monitoring for AI features
Champion autonomous test generation, intelligent regression analysis, and self-healing test approaches
Data & Pipeline Quality
Collaborate with data engineering to establish quality standards for data pipelines, reporting accuracy, and audit readiness
Support integrity validation for client-facing data flows (application inputs, credit decisioning outputs, loan servicing records)
Drive confidence in our data as a foundation for product analytics and business reporting
About you
7+ years in quality engineering, with 3+ years in a leadership or staff-level role managing
Proven ability to operate hands-on: you're comfortable writing test plans, reviewing automation code, and running exploratory tests yourself
Strong background in test automation with Jest, Playwright, and/or Cypress in a TypeScript/NestJS environment; experience with NX monorepo tooling a plus
Familiarity with API and service-level integration testing patterns (MSW, Supertest, NestJS Testing module)
Experience testing financial, compliance-sensitive, or regulated products — you understand what's at stake when things go wrong experimenting, not just watching from the sidelines
Background in fintech, lending, or financial services
Experience building a QA practice from early-stage or greenfield state
Familiarity with FCRA, TILA, or other consumer lending compliance standards
Experience with platform migration or modernization programs
Exposure to LLM evaluation tooling (Braintrust, Coval, or custom eval harnesses)
Experience with load testing (k6 or equivalent)
Familiarity with test observability tooling (ReportPortal, Datadog)
