Overview

The Director of Project Execution works collaboratively with Development and Pre-Construction to support construction due diligence, including constructability reviews, risk analyses, developing project schedules, reviewing budgets & capex estimates, and analyses of EPC RFP's, in support of construction projects.  The Director of Project Execution will broadly serve as the overall point of contact and subject matter expert for a rolling portfolio of projects and provides tactical leadership for project management and construction.  Assists in the development of strategic project objectives and provides direction for projects from late-stage development through the final construction phase and turnover to operations and asset management. Drives the execution of construction contracts and is responsible for executing projects on time and within budget. Ensures that safety, quality, cost, environmental, landowner, and legal requirements are properly addressed to support the project execution objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Provides strategic leadership and direction for assigned projects from late-stage development through the final development phase, approximately 6 – 12 months prior the start of construction
  • Supports the Pre-Construction Department by actively participating in the contracting RFP process for assigned projects through contract execution
  • Participates in a formal turnover and acceptance of the project from Pre-Construction to Construction execution and ultimately turnover to Asset Management
  • Works to support, develop, and implement a project execution plan that is formally communicated to all project stakeholders
  • Manages the integration of development and construction execution functions for committed projects
  • Provides tactical leadership for the preparation and maintenance of detailed project execution strategies, including contracting strategies, construction plans, schedules, and budgets
  • Ensures the overall success of project execution by consistently implementing construction management tools for each assigned project 
  • Understands the implications of variance technical options and is able to guide engineering designs to achieve the best solution for each situation
  • Supports the balance-of-plant process, preparation bid documents, and the Request for Proposal process, and assists with the negotiation of construction contracts
  • Ensures projects are adequately staffed, trained, and standard construction toolbox policies, procedures, and programs are adhered to in order to assure all project communications, issues, change orders, and quality items are well documented
  • Provides leadership during project construction activities, ensuring safety, quality, schedule, cost, environmental, landowner, and other project requirements are met or exceeded
  • Fully understands and manages all aspects of project contracts (EPC, BOP, TSA & PSA) and holds the contractors and suppliers accountable to perform at the highest level to ensure projects are completed on time and under budget
  • Develops key personnel for leadership roles and pushes employee decision making down to the appropriate level.  Institutes a culture of ownership and accountability by giving employees the training necessary to feel empowered to make decisions and hold them accountable to do so
  • Consolidates and analyzes budgets, costs, forecasts, and utilization against established financial goals
  • Ensures the execution of work in accordance with contracts and policies
  • Directs planning and hiring of competent field staff in order to ensure adequate resources are in place for effective and timely execution of committed projects
  • Develops effective relationships with internal departments, contractors, suppliers, landowners, and other stakeholders
  • Provides strategic direction and manages the development of Construction Project Managers, Project Engineers, and Construction Site Managers and provides supervision, guidance, and mentorship to assigned staff at all levels
  • Supports, and solicits input from, staff at all levels of the organization
  • Establishes effective and supportive relationships with colleagues
  • Reinforces a team approach throughout the enterprise, both on projects and internal initiatives
  • Effectively communicates relevant information to superiors
  • Champions change and effectively manages the implementation of new ideas, processes, tools, etc.
  • Additional duties as required

Education & Experience Required

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Construction Management; or equivalent years of experience in construction, project planning and execution of large utility-scale, power plant projects.
  • 7-10 years in the renewable energy sector or industrial construction or capital project management
  • Advanced knowledge of construction management and constructing methods for large projects, contract management, procurement, and supply chain management, environmental and building permitting, and transportation logistics
  • Basic knowledge of construction labor relations throughout the US
  • Works well under pressure and on a deadline, enjoys working with a variety of people.
  • Strong organizational and scheduling skills.

Location: This position is open to the Durham office or remote based out of Houston, Texas. For Durham, our team operates on a hybrid schedule, with in-office schedule of three days per week.
