The College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) Operations Team is responsible for agricultural and animal operations; information and educational technology; facilities and capital planning; CFAES Wooster facilities operations, and safety. The CFAES Operations team is a dynamic team across the Columbus, CFAES Wooster, and Statewide campuses. The operations team fosters a high-performance culture where the operational functions of the CFAES enterprise are focused on effective, efficient support of teaching, research, and Extension programs.

The Director of Facilities Planning and Project Management serves as a member of the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) Operations team, reporting the Associate Dean for Operations and is responsible for facility-related capital planning, space planning, deferred maintenance planning, program management, and execution in alignment with the CFAES and University Master Plans across the Columbus, CFAES Wooster and Statewide campus locations for CFAES. Facilities include over 2.6M square feet of buildings and approximately $26M annually in facility improvements including capital projects.

The director acts as a capital planning advisor to college leadership and prepares and proposes plans through the university approval process. The director manages and organizes projects and modifications through to completion and turnover; oversees and manages capital planning goals, budget, and building inventories for CFAES; approves project documents including, but not limited to, drawings and technical reviews and Program of Requirement (POR) developed by project teams and works with project managers where appropriate to establish an (OPR) Owner’s Program of Requirements. The position provides oversight and leadership for projects managed by CFAES and/or university parters with Facilities Design Construction (FDC), Facilities Operations Development (FOD), and Planning Architecture and Real Estate (PARE). In collaboration with university partners, local partners/jurisdictions as needed, ensures compliance with all federal, state, local, and University building codes, life safety, and other pertinent regulations; Maintains contact with CFAES leaders/community and stays abreast of potential projects; serves on capital project consultant selection committee as a representative for the college and attends critical project design and construction meetings; Communicates with stakeholders about facility planning strategy and project progress. The position will be required to interact and present to community and city government leaders, board members, and senior administrative and faculty leadership across CFAES and OSU.

Supervises – approximately 3 project managers as either direct reports or dotted line reports.

Key Responsibilities 

Strategic planning:

  • Lead the development of long-term facilities strategies, including capital planning, space optimization, and deferred maintenance programs.
  • Align plans with CFAES and University priorities. Serve as a liaison with Planning, Architecture, and Real Estate.

Program/project management leadership:

  • Oversight (interface) for projects college-wide working with CFAES and FDC project managers. Administrative oversight of day-to-day facilities operations across CFAES campuses. Including people (2-3 project management staff) and financials (~$26M annually).
  • Serves as a liaison with FOD & FDC. Serve as a POC for CFAES leadership team, faculty, and staff.
  • Tactical work interfacing with project leaders and project managers as oversight on projects, CFAES also manages projects independently which this role will be responsible for managing.

Project management:

  • Tactical work managing small projects.

Real estate:

  • Provides oversight for facilities CFAES leases to other entities and leases CFAES enters for facilities.

Committee service & representation:

  • Serves on CFAES committees and represents CFAES on university committees related to facilities planning and project management. Other duties as assigned.

Required Education: 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in architecture, construction systems, facilities planning, landscape architecture, engineering, or related field.

Required Experience:

  • 7 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in operational management, fiscal management, and budget planning.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of construction with expertise in at least one specialized area.


Desired Qualifications: 

  • Progressive experience in facilities planning and project management, including leadership of large-scale capital programs.
  • Advanced degree in related field.
  • Experience in planning higher education facilities or equivalent experience.
  • 12 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Current registration or licensure in related field.

Salary Range: $129,500 – $169,250/annually

The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit’s available budget, and the candidate’s qualifications.
