What You’ll Be Doing
CIBC Innovation Banking provides strategic advice and financing to venture capital, growth equity & private equity backed software and information technology companies located within North America and Europe at each stage of their business life cycle from startup to IPO and beyond. These companies are focused on revenue growth, experience EBITDA/cash flow negative operations and may not forecast profitability during the life of the credit facility.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Innovation Banking Risk Management, you will be managing a portfolio focused on Innovation Banking clients. You will be responsible for evaluating and adjudicating credit applications within your delegated lending authority, managing CIBC Innovation Banking’s loan portfolio to ensure it is efficiently maintained at an acceptable level of risk and loan losses are minimized, and partnering with the Innovation Banking Relationship Managers through regular dialogue and consultation. Through exercising good credit judgment, you will ensure all terms and conditions of authorizations are accurate and the Bank’s position is fully protected by way of adequate requirements and appropriate credit conditions.
Global Credit Risk Management (“GCRM”) is responsible for the independent adjudication and oversight of the management of credit risk in CIBC's Corporate, Commercial, Wealth Management, Real Estate, and Agriculture Portfolios. The GCRM mandate also includes Special Loans and the independent oversight of CIBC's Investment Asset Portfolios.
In fulfilling its mandate, GCRM works with its partners to understand, measure and monitor risk and adhere to CIBC's quality and concentration policies in order to maintain a risk profile that is consistent with the CIBC Risk Appetite Statement. This entails the assessment, measurement, adjudication, monitoring, reporting and follow-up of risk issues with respect to these portfolios. GCRM partners with other Risk Management functional groups and the Head of the Regions in ensuring the Regional Chief Risk Officer's adhere to global risk management risk practices and discipline as it relates to credit, market, liquidity and operational risk.
GCRM is located regionally within Canada, as well as in the USA, England, Luxembourg, and Australia.
At CIBC, we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 3 days per week on-site in Toronto (Tuesday-Thursday), while other days will be remote.
How You’ll Succeed
Sound Credit Management - Ensure credit decisions and recommendations are in accordance with sound credit-granting principles. Protect the bank’s assets and maintain portfolio quality by ensuring adherence to the Bank’s commercial lending processes, policies & procedures, legal and ethical requirements and regulations, audit requirements, and established risk guidelines.
Building Partnership and Communicate Effectively – Work closely with the business and relationship managers to review all credit submissions, internal portfolio trends and external environment for changing prospects and trends to ensure that emerging risks in the portfolio are identified.
Active Portfolio Management – Manage a portfolio of loan accounts and ensure comprehensive credit reviews are prepared and submitted by the business in accordance with bank policies and prescribed guidelines. Ensure the growth of CIBC Innovation Banking portfolio is aligned to the Bank’s risk appetite.
Be Proactive - Maintain up-to-date knowledge and understanding of products, processes, sponsor relationships, and relevant legal, regulatory and technology requirements to ensure decisions are adequately documented, and clearly communicated.
Who You Are
You can demonstrate experience. You have 5-7 or more years of experience in lending, commercial and/or corporate banking, and credit risk management. You have experience with structuring deals and identifying key risks and mitigants through effective due diligence. You also have strong knowledge of marketplace through working in technology lending, venture capital, and/or leveraged finance. Any leveraged finance, prior tech lending or corporate banking experience is considered a strong asset.
You can demonstrate knowledge. Some familiarity with mergers and acquisition process, capital markets products including derivative transactions is an asset. Good working knowledge of external financial and regulatory environment from a risk perspective. Knowledge of domestic regulatory and legal systems. Familiarity with challenging credit situations, workouts or recovery experience an advantage.
You have a degree/diploma. In Finance, Business, Accounting, Technology and/or related field. Advanced business degree or professional designation (MBA/CFA/CA/CGA/CMA) would be an asset.
You give meaning to financial data. You enjoy investigating complex problems and making sense of information. You communicate detailed information in an effective and meaningful way. You are proficient in MS Excel and have prior experience with analyzing data sets and working on financial models.
