An exceptional opportunity is available for a Director, Information Technology to lead and shape the technology strategy at Australia’s pre-eminent biomedical research institute. This pivotal role will drive digital innovation, strengthen enterprise systems, and ensure a secure, high-performing technology environment that enables world-class scientific discovery and organisational excellence.
About the Position
The Director, Information Technology (DIT) provides strategic and operational leadership of Information Technology Services at WEHI, ensuring digital platforms, infrastructure, cybersecurity and data capabilities enable world-class medical research and effective enterprise operations. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the DIT oversees the delivery, security and resilience of the Institute’s IT environment, including enterprise systems and audio-visual services.
Working closely with research, facilities and senior leadership teams, the DIT drives innovative, cost-effective technology solutions aligned to institutional priorities. The role is responsible for IT governance, risk and compliance, service excellence and change leadership, ensuring secure, reliable and future-focused technology services that support the Institute’s evolving needs.
Selection Criteria
Knowledge and Skills:
Senior leadership experience of IT and digital functions in a complex, high-assurance environment (research, health, higher education or equivalent).
Strong understanding of enterprise IT, cybersecurity, cloud and data platforms.
Demonstrated ability to partner effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Proven experience managing material budgets, vendors and risk.
Ability to engage effectively with senior leadership and governance stakeholders.”
Relevant degree level qualification preferably to postgraduate level and containing science sub-majors.
Solid experience in overseeing the delivery of IT services in complex environments.
Personal Qualities:
Ability to maintain high integrity and confidentiality.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate and work effectively in teams or committees across the organisation to achieve shared goals.
Skilled in handling complex issues diplomatically and negotiating optimal outcomes in challenging situations.
Strong leadership capabilities, with a focus on staff development and empowerment, while acknowledging and leveraging individual contributions.
Strong attention to detail and effective time management skills, including the ability to prioritise workload and distinguish between what is critical and what is not.
Exceptional oral, written and interpersonal skills, including the ability to build and manage relationships with a broad range of stakeholders, together with the aptitude to interact with both technical and nontechnical groups.
Ability to deliver excellence by demonstrating personal accountability and fostering a high-performance culture within the team.
Terms of Appointment
This position is available for 5 years in a full time capacity. Up to 17% superannuation and very attractive salary packaging options are available.
