Job Description
The Global Corporate Banking Technology team, part of RBC's Capital Markets Quantitative and Technology Services division, is seeking an accomplished Director to lead our data organization in delivering transformative technology solutions. You will provide strategic direction and governance, overseeing the development and maintenance of robust data solutions while driving organizational capability and innovation. Working with senior stakeholders across Corporate Banking, Global Credit, Risk, Finance, and Wealth Management, you will shape our data strategy, establish best-in-class practices, and ensure our systems and processes remain at the forefront of industry standards. Your leadership will be instrumental in modernizing our Loan Origination and Servicing businesses and expanding our data platforms to support new business initiatives.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Define and execute the data organization and reporting strategy aligned with business and technology roadmaps, ensuring resource allocation supports strategic priorities and drives measurable business outcomes.
Oversee the end-to-end delivery of enterprise data solutions across multiple teams, managing portfolio prioritization, governance frameworks, and cross-functional dependencies in complex, matrix environments.
Build, coach, and develop a high-performing data organization, including team leads and individual contributors, fostering a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Partner with senior business stakeholders and executives to translate strategic business objectives into technical architectures and data capabilities, serving as a strategic advisor on data modernization and transformation initiatives.
Drive innovation by researching and evaluating emerging technologies, data platforms, and methodologies to maintain competitive advantage and reduce technical debt.
Lead vendor evaluation and management, third-party integrations, and build-versus-buy decisions for critical data infrastructure and tools.
Ensure operational excellence through defined SLAs, incident management governance, production support models, and disaster recovery planning across all systems and data stores.
Communicate technical strategy and business impact to executives and board-level stakeholders, presenting business cases for major initiatives and organizational investments.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?
Must Have:
8+ years of experience designing, developing, and managing enterprise data solutions at scale, including hands-on expertise with modern data or equivalent data warehouse/lake solutions.
Advanced proficiency in SQL programming, data modeling, and performance optimization across both traditional RDBMS (Oracle, MS SQL Server) and modern distributed data systems; proven ability to architect scalable solutions.
5+ years of experience managing and building high-performing technical teams in matrix environments, with demonstrated track record in talent development, recruitment, performance management, and organizational scaling.
Comprehensive understanding of modern data integration and ETL/ELT frameworks including cloud-native tools and traditional platforms (Unix scripting, Python, DataStage, Database utilities), with ability to evaluate and recommend appropriate solutions.
Nice-to-Have:
Hands-on experience with NoSQL databases (MongoDB, DynamoDB, Cassandra) and polyglot data architectures, demonstrating ability to select appropriate data store types for specific use cases.
Expertise in modern data stack technologies including data lakes (Delta Lake, Apache Iceberg), Apache Spark, and streaming platforms (Kafka, Kinesis) for real-time data processing.
Proficiency in modern programming languages and frameworks used in data engineering (Python, Unix scripting) and experience with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and source control management (Git).
Proven strategic business acumen specifically in Capital Markets or financial services, with deep understanding of loan origination, credit risk, data governance, and regulatory requirements in financial institutions.
Background in implementing data governance frameworks, data catalogs, metadata management, and data quality automation
Knowledge of machine learning platforms and MLOps practices, or experience building data foundations to support advanced analytics and AI initiatives.
