The Opportunity
The Director, Generative AI Applications leads a high-performing team focused on building internal products with Generative AI tools. This role is responsible for envisioning and owning the roadmap for Gen AI application delivery within a fast-moving team. You will drive the design of extensible multi-agent applications, ensuring business impact through wide product usage while fostering relationships across the global Roche organization. As a leader, you will oversee hiring, provide mentorship, and influence technical priorities to ensure the team's long-term success in a complex enterprise environment.
Strategic Roadmap Execution: Define and drive the Gen AI product roadmap, ensuring the delivery of high-value applications that meet the demands of a fast-paced, evolving team.
Portfolio Leadership: Lead the design and construction of an extensible portfolio of multi-agent applications by collaborating deeply with internal stakeholders.
Full Lifecycle Ownership: Oversee the complete lifecycle of agentic products, ensuring rigorous standards for reliability, compliance, and alignment with enterprise governance.
Enterprise Influence: Navigate complex enterprise environments to influence technical priorities and represent the team’s interests across Genentech and the global Roche organization.
People Development & Leadership: Coach and mentor engineers to foster professional growth, cultivate future leaders in the Gen AI domain, and set clear, actionable performance goals while maintaining a high bar for engineering excellence and operational success.
Culture & Communication: Foster a sense of belonging and motivation within the team while bridging communication between organizational strategy and ground-level execution.
Who You Are
Bachelors degree in a relevant field and 8+ years of work experience in Data Science, AI, or relevant technical field.
Proven track record of building B2B Gen AI applications using cutting-edge LLMs, multimodal architectures, and frameworks like LangChain, LangGraph, or AWS Agentcore.
Mastery of RAG architectures, document optimization (chunking), MCP, and A2A protocols, with hands-on experience converting traditional ML models and APIs into agentic, MCP-compliant tools.
Expert-level knowledge of vector/graph databases and SQL/Text-to-SQL techniques, combined with a deep understanding of observability tools to manage cost, reliability, and latency.
Demonstrated ability to lead technical roadmaps and translate complex agentic strategies for both technical and non-technical stakeholders through excellent communication.
Strong foundation in software product development lifecycles, ensuring that generative AI solutions are built with enterprise-grade scalability and rigor.
Preferred:
Experience with multimodal Gen AI tools, specifically regarding voice interfaces.
Knowledge of security common protocols within an enterprise AI context.
Experience in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, or highly regulated industries.
Relevant certifications in cloud architecture or AI technologies.
This position is based in South San Francisco, CA and offers a hybrid schedule working 3 days per week on campus.
Relocation benefits are not available for this posting.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, CA is $214,500 - $398,300. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
