Environmental Services Manager 

Job Description 

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Environmental Service Manager oversees the efficient operations of Environment Services, including the Laundry, Housekeeping and Maintenance departments. The Environmental Manager works continuously to improve processes within the available resources, leading the teams in all 3 departments in implementing resident-focused services. Ensures residents safety and comfort by following Extendicare’s policies and procedures along with Fixing Long-Term Care Act 2021(FLTCA). Making sure to understand the fundamental principles of the act; the long-term care home is primarily the home of its residents and is to be operated so that it is a place where they may live with dignity and is security, safety and comfort and have their physical, psychological, social, spiritual and cultural needs adequately met. 

To achieve the above the following duties and responsibilities must be met for Maintenance, Laundry & Housekeeping departments 

  • Facilitates the planning and implementation of Environmental Services to accomplish annual goals and objectives consistent with the vision of Southlake Village. 
  • Ensure the maintenance of records as required by law, accreditation for Long Term Care facilities and oversee all phases of housekeeping, laundry and maintenance in accordance with department standards. 
  • Oversee duties concerned with maintenance of grounds, parking lots, driveways, including landscaping, cleanup, snow removal and exterior Southlake property. 
  • Oversee exterior equipment such as generator, transformer HVAC equipment on the roof. Making sure that all equipment is checked and preventative maintenance is done to meet any and all standards. 
  • Ensure preventative maintenance is performed and logged for Electrical, Lighting, Plumbing, Water Systems, HVAC, Beds, Doors, Laundry equipment, Kitchen Equipment, Fire Safety, Boilers, Eye wash stations and Daily temperatures are performed except those services performed under service contracts. 
  • Ensure that all records and licenses are up to date for Maintenance, Laundry and Housekeeping. 
  • Conduct ongoing quality inspections and reports. 
  • Ensure appropriate processes and controls are in place at the floor level to efficiently manage resources (Staff and Supplies). 
  • Coordinates equipment and furnishing repairs. 
  •  Coordinates fire drills and annual codes per Extendicare policies 
  • Manages all facility contracts, pest control, waste removal, confidential shredding, linen, window cleaning, security services, groundskeeping, laundry contracts, fire alarm services, HVAC services, electrical services, plumbing services, elevator services, flooring, furniture and general contractors. 
  • Maintaining liaison with regulatory bodies and awareness of regulations impacting on environmental cleaning and building standards.  
  • Hire, fire and orientate staff in all 3 departments (Laundry, Maintenance & Housekeeping) on WHMIS, all codes and proper handling pf all chemicals. 
  •  Contract procurements for various projects and develop cost analysis for such projects. 
  • Monitors and approves purchases associated with the designated portion of the budget assigned, including housekeeping supplies, laundry supplies, maintenance supplies and outside contractors. 
  • Manages all aspects within the laundry department, staff, laundry supplies, linen and equipment. 
  • Manages all aspects within the housekeeping department, staff, chemicals, paper products and equipment. 
  • Ensures all housekeeping chemicals meet all safety requirements and are effective products. 
  • Interacts with staff, residents and family members to ensure environmental services are met.  
  • Ensures staff scheduling, works assignments, payroll and attendance management are met. 
  • Operates within the guidelines as determined by CUPE collective agreement. (union) 
  • Assist in the development of the annual budget and monitor operations in relation to staffing, supplies, linen, maintenance contracts and capital equipment. 
  • Liaison to Southlake Medical Center both 5th floor occupants and hospital counterpart. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director. 

Education and Experience 

  • Building Environmental Systems (BES) preferred, WHIMIS certified, Health and Safety certified. 
  • Environmental Management experience 3 years preferred. 
  • Minimum 3 years of Long-Term Care experience and 3 years management experience preferred. 
  • Canadian Healthcare Housekeepers’ Association (CHHA) Member 

 

Physical and Mental Demands 

  • Some physical demands, walking, lifting and climbing. 
  • Able to assist maintenance. 
  • Able to be on-call and able to respond to emergency calls and assist when needed. 
  • Work is performed both in office environment and facility. Some hands-on maintenance work.
