Director – Data Migration Design Lead

Portugal - Lisboa Full time

We are seeking a Director, Data Migration Design Lead to provide technical leadership and governance for migration design across a global ERP transformation, including SAP S/4HANA and connected data platforms. In this role, you will define and govern the standards, patterns, and specifications that enable consistent, high-quality, and reusable data migrations across multiple geographies and deployment waves.

You will act as the technical design authority for migration design, translating business and programme needs into clear, executable design inputs for delivery teams. Working in close partnership with Data Migration Engine Delivery (DMED) and Migration Build/Run colleagues, you will help make migration design repeatable, automated, and increasingly efficient with each release—supporting faster decisions, streamlined operations, and better outcomes for patients.

Accountabilities

  • Migration design leadership and governance: Lead Data Migration Data Analysts and Data Migration Design Leads to deliver migration design objectives, with ownership of migration specifications, patterns, and standards across deployments and domains.
  • Authoritative design to enable delivery: Provide high-fidelity, actionable migration design specifications to DMED, aligned to delivery constraints, timelines, and implementation realities.
  • Standardisation, traceability, and control: Define and govern design artefacts that enable audit-ready traceability, consistent rule application, and clear sign-off criteria across markets and waves.
  • Quality and automation: Establish quality gates, design reviews, and guidelines for artefacts (for example mapping rules, reconciliation approach, validation criteria, defect triage pathways) to reduce rework and improve reliability.
  • Roadmaps and continuous improvement: Create and maintain migration design roadmaps and plans that maximise current platforms while adapting to new technologies and evolving programme needs.
  • Integration with build, run, and cutover: Partner with Migration Build and Run Leads to embed designs into delivery, supporting run/load activities, cutover readiness, and rapid resolution of design-to-delivery issues.
  • Technology evaluation and innovation: Lead proof-of-technology/value assessments for migration design tooling and practices, providing technical inputs to cases and adoption decisions.
  • Estimation and planning: Provide technical estimates and design inputs for deployments and projects, supporting planning, sequencing, and realistic delivery commitments.
  • Capability and operating model development: Build the migration design capability through training, tooling, ways of working, and an effective operating model, including oversight of offshore contributions.
  • Reusable assets and enterprise enablement: Ensure migration design outputs and data assets are produced as reusable artefacts and services to accelerate future deployments and broader analytics/BI consumption.
  • Stakeholder partnership and architectural alignment: Build strong relationships with business and data stakeholders to shape demand and priorities, and align approaches with Enterprise Architecture and Technology Innovation standards.

Essential skills/experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science, Data Management, or a related field.
  • Significant experience delivering data migration outcomes, including designing solutions that can be built, operated, and improved over time.
  • Strong solution and data design skills suited to Agile delivery, with experience acting as a technical design authority.
  • Proficiency in data engineering techniques and testing methodologies, including data validation, reconciliation, and defect triage.
  • Experience with technologies used for migration pipelines and services (for example ETL/ELT, orchestration, test automation, metadata/catalog/MDM).
  • Solid understanding of data/application design patterns relevant to large-scale migrations, including standardisation and reuse.

Desirable skills/experience

  • Experience leading migration design in large-scale ERP transformations, ideally involving SAP S/4HANA and SAP data models.
  • Proven success industrialising migration patterns and automation across multiple waves/markets, including metadata and lineage practices.
  • Experience in regulated environments requiring strong controls, traceability, and auditability for data movement.
  • Experience implementing DevOps/DataOps approaches (for example CI/CD for data pipelines and automated testing).
  • Track record leading distributed and offshore teams with measurable improvements in throughput and quality.
  • Strong stakeholder influence, communicating design decisions in terms of business value, risk, and delivery trade-offs.
