Position Summary
This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice President, Compliance (Business Unit Compliance Officer – "BUCO") supporting the Sun Life International (Bermuda) Business Unit. The Director serves as the designated Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) and plays a critical role in championing a forward-thinking, risk-based AML/ATF program that protects Sun Life while enabling business growth.
In this role, you'll combine deep technical expertise with a proactive, solution-oriented approach—coming in ready to assess controls, identify gaps, and implement practical improvements from day one. You'll drive meaningful compliance transformation, leverage emerging technologies, and collaborate with senior leadership to shape the enterprise's AML/ATF strategy.
The Director oversees day-to-day compliance with Sun Life AML/ATF Operating Guidelines, implements second-line compliance testing, manages regulatory correspondence and examinations, and works closely with the CAMLO on enterprise-wide AML innovation initiatives. You'll mentor junior compliance staff, influence the compliance technology roadmap, and build a high-performing team culture grounded in ethical behavior and regulatory excellence.
The position is located in Hamilton, Bermuda with occasional travel to other locations both domestic and international.
Key AML/ATF Responsibilities
- Maintain processes and records for filing all prescribed reports to local authorities with timely reporting of suspicious activity
- Act as point of contact with the Financial Intelligence Agency, Bermuda Police Service, and other government agencies regarding SAR filings and investigations
- Develop and implement adequate day-to-day AML/ATF controls in compliance with local AML/ATF laws and Sun Life Operating Guidelines
- Provide strategic guidance on AML/ATF initiatives, regulatory developments, and approval of new or revised AML/ATF procedures
- Take proactive action to prevent and suspend prohibited activity under applicable Sanctions Laws, including asset freezing and reporting
- Report and escalate material AML/ATF matters to Management, BUCO, and CAMLO, ensuring transparency and compliance program effectiveness
- Develop and deliver training and educational programs related to AML/ATF
- Collaborate with CAMLO on enterprise-wide AML innovation initiatives and modernization efforts
General Responsibilities
- Represent Sun Life with regulatory agencies and law enforcement authorities
- Provide compliance advice and support for product development and distribution channels
- Design and execute risk-based compliance testing to ensure procedure and control effectiveness
- Assess fraud risk and coordinate reporting of fraud incidents
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of company risk management policies and procedures
- Assist with periodic risk assessments, including annual AML/ATF risk assessments
- Prepare compliance bulletins, review marketing materials and communications to ensure alignment with regulatory requirements and business practices
- Participate in Compliance Focus Group meetings assessing new or amended laws and regulations
- Collaborate with senior management to foster a "tone from the top" compliance culture that promotes ethical behavior and Code of Conduct adherence
AML/ATF Expertise:
- Deep knowledge of risk-based AML/ATF frameworks, including customer due diligence (CDD), enhanced due diligence (EDD), and ongoing transaction monitoring methodologies
- Demonstrated expertise in suspicious activity detection patterns, typologies, and reporting thresholds
- Proficiency with sanctions screening tools and Financial Action Task Force (FATF) guidelines
- Experience with regulatory correspondence, examination responses, and remediation tracking
- Strong understanding of the Bermuda Sanctions Regime and related government agency requirements
Technical & Data Skills:
- Proficiency with data analytics and compliance testing tools
- Experience with AML software platforms and transaction monitoring systems
- Comfort with automation and process improvement technologies for compliance workflows
- Ability to translate complex data into actionable compliance insights
Education & Credentials:
- Bachelor's Degree in a business-related field
- Advanced degree or compliance-related professional designations (e.g., ACAM, CIA, CAMS) preferred
Experience:
- 10+ years of professional compliance experience, including filing suspicious activity reports with a financial intelligence unit or similar government agency.
- Proven track record of delivering compliance improvements and process enhancements in first 90 days
- Experience managing people with demonstrated talent development and team leadership
- Experience working within matrixed organizations preferred
