Compensation Range

Job Summary

Reporting to the Dean, this position provides strategic and operational leadership for the Faculty of Management. This position supports the Dean and the Faculty’s leadership team in a collaborative manner and plays a key role in strategy, governance, accreditation readiness, budgets and the Faculty’s reputation. The role requires building productive relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, Indigenous partners, industry and community stakeholders. Reporting to the Dean, this position partners with the Dean and Associate Deans and may serve as the Associate Dean’s delegate on university and community committees. The role provides strategic leadership and supervision to the Faculty’s BCGEU and M&P staff. By definition, this position includes special projects and other duties as assigned.

This position requires a broad and deep understanding of the University of British Columbia, the Okanagan and Vancouver campus contexts, and the policies, processes and practices that support academic excellence, student success and responsible stewardship. This position develops quality relationships across the institution to facilitate short, medium and long-term planning for programs and initiatives, and to shape strategic responses to institutional issues and opportunities that elevate the Faculty’s profile. Cross-portfolio and cross-institutional collaboration is crucial to deliver integrated solutions that meet Faculty and university objectives.

This position develops relationships with key external bodies and associations relevant to management education, including accreditation and professional organizations, industry partners and community groups aligned with the Faculty’s teaching, research and service mission.

To maximize strategic support to the Dean, the position:

  • Provides confidential strategic, tactical and comprehensive advice to the Dean.

  • Serves a triage function for major operational or reputational issues affecting the Faculty, in concert with the Dean’s leadership team and UBC partners.

  • Facilitates and supports implementation of the Faculty strategic plan and academic priorities.

  • Liaises with a broad range of offices internal and external to UBC, including government, educational institutions, and private industry.

  • Works with Faculty and university governance bodies to develop and coordinate materials for Faculty Council, Senate committees and related governance processes.

  • The position also ensures effective and efficient management of the Faculty operations, including budget oversight for the portfolio.

Organizational Status

Reports directly to the Dean, UBC Faculty of Management. Works closely with Associate Deans, Directors, the Manager, Dean’s Office, and senior university administration. Participates in hiring and review processes for Faculty leadership roles as appropriate. Coordinates Faculty-wide responses on issues with significant operational or reputational risk.

Work Performed

Strategic Leadership

  • Supports the Dean and leadership team in establishing and implementing strategic and operational plans.

  • Translates academic and strategic priorities into initiatives with clear outcomes and performance measures.

  • Leads or supports strategic initiatives related to new and existing programs, research intensity, experiential learning, cooperative education, student advising and career development.

Academic Planning, Quality and Accreditation

  • Coordinates academic planning and quality assurance processes, including curriculum review, program proposals and cyclical reviews.

  • Leads accreditation readiness and continuous improvement efforts, including alignment with AACSB standards and evidence collection.

  • Partners with faculty members and academic leaders to enhance teaching, research and service excellence.

Faculty Governance and Relationship Management

  • Prepares briefing notes and recommendations for the Dean on issues from across the Faculty and University, and synthesizes materials from external sources.

  • Works with University Relations to position the Dean and Faculty on matters of public visibility and reputation.

  • Represents the Dean’s Office on strategic committees and working groups.

  • Initiates and coordinates consultations to advance key initiatives.

  • Serves as an information resource on behalf of the Dean for units and individuals across the University.

Operations, Budget and People Leadership

  • Oversees Faculty operations, ensuring effective workflow, records, scheduling protocols and meeting preparation are followed.

  • Prepares or oversees portfolio budgets, monitors expenditures and identifies efficiency strategies.

  • Collaborates with central finance and academic operations on Faculty and university budget processes.

  • Recruits, develops and retains staff within the Dean’s Office and assigned units.

  • Conducts performance reviews and manages staff performance.

  • Develops and maintains portfolio policies, procedures and standards.

  • Oversees space and infrastructure needs within the Faculty and its portfolios.

Student Experience and Community Engagement

  • Champions a high-quality student experience, including advising, career development, experiential education and inclusive learning environments.

  • Builds partnerships with alumni, employers, industry and community organizations to expand opportunities for students and to support the Faculty’s public and economic impact.

  • Works with Ceremonies and Events, Development and Alumni Engagement and other partners on events and advancement initiatives.

Issues Management and Risk

  • Identifies emerging issues and risks. Provides advice and triage on complex, sensitive or time-critical matters.

  • Coordinates integrated responses that protect academic quality, student experience, people and culture, and the Faculty’s reputation.

  • Ensures appropriate confidentiality and records management.

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenous Engagement

  • Demonstrates a commitment to EDI and Indigenous engagement in decision-making, planning and daily operations.

The role requires independent action and sound judgement in advising on strategy, academic quality, budget stewardship and issues management. The incumbent exercises discretion and maintains strict confidentiality.

Works independently within the strategic direction set by the Dean. Objectives are discussed and progress is reviewed with the Dean.

Supervision Given

Leads and coordinates the supervision of all Faculty staff, ensuring alignment with the Faculty’s strategic, operational, and people priorities. Provides direction to project teams and working groups. Leads Managers responsible for student services, academic operations and strategic initiatives.

Qualifications

Minimum

  • Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of seven years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own.

  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing awareness, knowledge and skills related to equity, diversity and inclusion.

Preferred

  • MBA or a Master’s Degree in a business discipline preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in a large and complex private or public sector organization, including management experience at a senior level.

  • Experience in a university environment, preferably at a business school, is an asset.

  • Experience with academic planning, quality assurance and accreditation.

  • Ability to think and act independently, see broad implications, anticipate issues and manage contentious interactions.
