Job Summary
The Digital Solutions Finance Controller will lead budget planning, forecasting, and spend management for a portfolio of digital, data, and innovation initiatives. This role partners closely with Product Owners, Engineering Leads, Program Managers, and senior leadership to provide financial insights that enable strategic decision-making and ensure strong fiscal performance across the digital investment portfolio.
The ideal candidate brings strong financial acumen, analytical rigor, and the ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, technology-driven environments. This role oversees monthly and quarterly financial routines; manages risks, opportunities, and budget reallocations; supports procurement and contract governance; and drives process improvements that enhance forecasting accuracy and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include managing actuals vs. budget performance, leading variance analysis, evaluating investment scenarios, monitoring cloud and software spend, and ensuring financial controls and compliance. Success requires excellent communication skills, the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights, and strong partnerships with cross-functional teams across Finance, PMO, Engineering, and Procurement.
Budget Planning & Forecasting
- Build and maintain annual operating budgets for digital programs (cloud, AI, data platforms, app dev, innovation pilots).
- Partner Digital Solutions teams to forecast spend across labor, contractors, software licenses, cloud consumption, and capital investments.
- Challenge and validate assumptions, timelines, and resource needs.
- Align budgets with strategic roadmaps and multi-year investment plans.
Portfolio & Spend Management
- Track actuals vs. budget/forecast monthly and quarterly.
- Manage variance analysis: identify drivers of over/underspend and recommend corrective actions.
- Oversee risk & opportunity (R&O) management, ensuring timely updates and clear mitigation plans.
- Manage incremental budget requests, reallocations, and approvals.
- Provide visibility into run vs. innovation spend and capital vs. expense breakdowns.
- Monitor cloud optimization opportunities and digital tool rationalization.
Financial Governance & Controls
- Ensure compliance with financial policies for capitalization, procurement, contract management, and vendor onboarding.
- Review SOWs, change orders, and purchase requests to verify financial accuracy and funding.
- Support internal/external audits with required documentation.
- Maintain financial controls for accuracy, approvals, and backups.
Business Partnering & Stakeholder Alignment
- Advise engineering leaders, PMs, architects, and innovation leads on financial impacts of decisions.
- Facilitate monthly or quarterly reviews with senior leadership.
- Translate complex financial data into clear insights and scenarios for decision making.
- Provide financial guidance during roadmap shaping or project intake cycles.
Education and Experience Required
- Four-year or Graduate Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or any other related discipline or commensurate work experience or demonstrated competence.
- Typically has 10+ years of work experience, preferably in financial management, internal audit, accounting, or a related field.
Preferred Certifications
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA)
- Master’s degree in Business Admisnistration (MBA)
Knowledge & Skills
Financial Expertise
- Strong budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis skills.
- Deep understanding of capital vs. expense classifications and accounting rules.
- Ability to manage portfolio-level financials across multiple programs and cost centers.
- Proficiency in risk & opportunity management and scenario modeling.
- Experience with cost optimization, especially for cloud, SaaS, and digital tools.
Technical & Digital Acumen
- Familiarity with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud consumption models.
- Understanding of software development lifecycles, agile delivery, and innovation pipelines.
- Ability to evaluate financial implications of digital investments (AI products, data platforms, automation tools).
Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills
- Strong quantitative analysis and ability to translate data into insights.
- Able to break down complex financial structures and identify cost drivers.
- Detail-orientation with the ability to manage large datasets and multi-source information.
Business Partnering & Communication
- Ability to partner with engineering, product, procurement, and PMO teams.
- Strong communication skills to explain financial insights to non-finance stakeholders.
- Able to influence decision-making through clear insights and storytelling.
- Experience facilitating monthly / quarterly business reviews with senior leaders.
Governance & Operational Discipline
- Strong understanding of procurement, vendor management, SOWs, and contract processes.
- Ability to enforce financial controls and ensure compliance with policies.
- Skilled in process improvement and standardization of financial routines.
- Comfortable working in fast-paced environments with shifting priorities.
