Undergrad student wage position for up to 20 hours week in summer 2026. More work hours may be possible depending on regulations/restrictions and/or individual availability and interest in alignment with the unit budget. There may be some possibility that this job could continue into the 2026-2027 academic year.
We are looking for students with experience and/or interest in photography and associated book work or library work. This is for the Digital Production Group or DPG, a UVA Library unit in Shannon, that photographs rare materials and also rare but still circulating books that we consider to be 'medium rare.' We anticipate hiring up to four students for work this summer (2026).
It may be possible for some work to continue into the 2026-2027 academic year. If you anticipate receiving a federal work study award this fall, this would be helpful to know.
The Digital Production Group (DPG) at the University of Virginia Library provides a full suite of services that create, manage, deliver, and expand access to the University of Virginia's distinctive digital collections. The DPG's primary mission is to convert the Library's rare, medium rare and unique materials to digital formats which the U.Va. community can use to support research and instructional needs.
Additional duties include but are not limited to:
Care and handling of rare and unique library materials (books, manuscripts, maps, photographs, negatives, etc.)
Software packages: CaptureOne, Adobe Photoshop and the department's tracking system and project processing software.
Equipment: Principally Phase One medium format cameras, a large-format Cruse scanner (for oversize items), Atiz book scanners using Canon cameras, and Epson flatbed scanners. There may be some opportunity to learn/use other professional cameras and tools for rare material work.
Positions can extend through the summer of 2026, subject to any changes that could alter the University’s schedule. Continuation of this work may also extend into the fall of 2026, also contingent on the University's schedule.
Please include a cover letter and resume with your application. Again, if you are interested in continuing work after the summer and if you anticipate a FWS award for the fall semester, please note this in your application. This is not required for consideration or hiring.
