Job Summary: This Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (ORT) position is assigned to the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System, Imaging Service; General Radiology section within the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center. This is a general medical and surgical facility, classified as a Level 1A facility. It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology as well as education and limited research. In addition to the main facility in Bay Pines.

Major Duties:

  • a. Technologist meets the requirements set forth in VAHCS MEMORANDUM 516-14-11-005; BLS Certification is maintained on a bi-annual basis and is in compliance at all times. b. Accurately operates a wide variety of imaging equipment to obtain examinations of acceptable quality. This includes but is not limited to: Fluoroscopic and General Diagnostic exams, Portable Radiography, Portable Fluoroscopy, Operating Room and all other duties assigned. c. Technologist works under the supervision of the Section Supervisor and Lead Technologist and rotates all responsibilities within the General Radiology section. Incumbent will also support the other modalities by providing limited coverage as needed. He/she works independently on most exams, but confers with Radiologists and Section Supervisor and/or Lead Technologist on more difficult examinations. Work is spot-checked for achievement of objectives. d. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology including location, appearance, and functioning of the major and minor systems susceptible to radiographic illumination and knowledge of changes to systems and organs caused by common medical and surgical diseases. e. Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the radiologist for the purpose of performing exams requiring injectable or consumable solutions such as UGl's, BE's, Small Bowel, , Modified Barium Swallows, Venograms, Cystograms, Cholangiograms, Fistulagrams, Arthrography, etc. Improper use or administration of the contrast materials run the risk of patient modality. e. Records all doses of radiation for fluoroscopy and portable fluoroscopy exams in the technologist comment section in Vista and /or by generating and sending the dose summary report from the fluoroscopy equipment. f. Technologist is competent and educated in all service policies pertaining to the technologist and their assigned work section. Maintains knowledge of all department and General Radiology section policies, aknowledging the receipt and understanding of these policies by signing the supervisory copy of the policy. g. Performs and completes imaging studies within the established guidelines for stat, pre-op, urgent and routine exams. Qualifications: Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in both written and spoken English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402 (d), and 7407 (d). Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Certification: Must be certified in Advanced Radiology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology ARRT (R). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be used when determining the appropriate grade assignment of candidates. GS-8: Experience: Completion of at least 1 year of qualifying experience equivalent to the GS-7 grade level (for a total of 3 years of DRT experience). Qualifying experience would include independently performing a substantially full range of duties but receive occasional oversight or direction for highly complex issues and providing services in specialized areas of radiologic technology and/or general radiologic technology services. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs. Ability to check system for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines. Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to make adjustments as needed. Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results. Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during the procedure and keep the radiologist informed. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.
