Description

The Development Officer provides direct support for the fundraising activities of the Oklahoma Historical Society (OHS). Their primary responsibility is to help the OHS achieve annual financial goals through fundraising, donor relations, and grant writing. They execute annual fundraising campaigns and events, oversee the OHS donor portfolio, work collaboratively across agency divisions on grant projects, and serve as a steward to new and existing donors. This role reports to the Executive Director and has significant responsibility for overseeing complex projects.

Essential Job Duties

·         Establish annual fundraising goals, department budget and calendar.

  • Conduct targeted donor appeals and programming to cultivate new donors and diversify the OHS donor portfolio.

  • Create a new planned giving program.

  • Evaluate the success of fundraising campaigns and materials throughout the year and make suggestions for necessary adjustments to meet goals.

  • Act as project lead on fundraising appeals, including the OHS Annual Giving Campaign.

  • Oversee the execution of fundraising events. This includes acting as point person during events, organizing set-up, catering, presenters, entertainment, registration, seating charts, etc.

  • Solicit corporate and private sponsorships for OHS events and programming.

  • Manage and execute donor acknowledgements, tax receipts, and invoices.

  • Serve as a liaison to the Oklahoma City Community Foundation and accompanying endowment fund accounts.

  • Work collaboratively across OHS divisions to write grant proposals and compile necessary information for applications and reports.

  • Manage grant submissions, agreements, reporting, and recognition requirements.

  • Update federal grant registrations and charitable giving donor platforms.

  • Maintain accurate donor and grant records in Raiser’s Edge database.

  • Compile fundraising data for quarterly board reports, publication lists, donor recognition lists, and an annual report for OHS supporters.

  • Assist division team members with marketing plans, including producing solicitation materials for fundraising, sponsorships, and division events.

  • Initiate internal communications, including developing newsletter content, social media content, emails, event announcements, and sponsor and donor recognition.

  • Update primary donor and sponsorship materials, appeal letters, thank you letters, and brochures annually.

  • Remain up to date with current fundraising best practices through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, and attending professional development opportunities.

  • May require some nights and weekends.

Skills and Knowledge
Solid understanding of basic fundraising principles. Strong organizational skills and ability to follow through on projects. Excellent project management skills and the ability to think strategically. Superior verbal and written communication skills and ability to confidently interact with a wide variety of individuals. Able to maintain confidentiality. Ability to work on a team and with other divisions to achieve a common goal. Strong computer skills with proficiency in Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams and familiarity with database management.

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Business, Philanthropy, Finance, English, or related field and a minimum of three years’ experience in fundraising or development. An equivalent combination of education and experience, substituting one year of experience for each year of the required bachelor’s degree, may also be accepted. This can include any of the following: grant writing, grant managing, giving campaigns, endowments, planned giving, event planning, individual giving, or membership programs.
