Job Summary

The Dental Lab Technician – Zirconia Milling Specialist is responsible for producing high-quality zirconia crowns and restorations using advanced CAD/CAM technology. This role focuses on precision milling, design accuracy, quality control, and efficient workflow management to support clinical teams and deliver exceptional patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Zirconia Milling & Fabrication:

  • Operate CAD/CAM milling equipment to fabricate zirconia crowns, bridges, and implant restorations.

  • Design restorations in CAD software (e.g., exocad, 3Shape) ensuring proper anatomy, margins, contacts, and occlusion.

  • Calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot milling equipment and sintering furnaces.

  • Perform pre-milling and post-milling processes including nesting, sprue removal, contouring, shaping, and polishing.

Quality Control:

  • Inspect margins, fit, esthetics, and surface quality prior to delivery.

  • Verify shade selection, translucency requirements, and material integrity.

  • Ensure all restorations meet internal quality standards, clinical specifications, and regulatory requirements.

Workflow & Communication:

  • Collaborate closely with dentists, clinical teams, and lab leadership to ensure accurate prescriptions and case expectations.

  • Review digital scans and impressions for accuracy and request remakes when needed.

  • Track case progress, meet production timelines, and maintain organized digital and physical workflows.

Equipment & Material Management:

  • Maintain inventory of zirconia blocks, burs, polishing supplies, and lab materials.

  • Monitor wear of milling tools and coordinate timely replacements.

  • Adhere to manufacturer protocols and safety requirements.

Qualifications:

Required

  • 2–5 years of experience in dental laboratory technology with strong focus on zirconia restorations.

  • Hands-on experience operating CAD/CAM milling machines (e.g., Ivoclar, Roland, Amann Girrbach, Sirona).

  • Proficiency in CAD design platforms such as exocad or 3Shape.

  • Strong understanding of dental anatomy, occlusion, and restorative workflows.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, quality orientation, and manual dexterity.
     

Preferred:

  • Experience in implant restorations, hybrid prosthetics, or full-arch zirconia designs.

  • Knowledge of staining, glazing, and esthetic contouring techniques.

  • CDT certification or formal dental laboratory technology training.

Work Environment:

 While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of radiation. The noise level is usually low.  Since everyone within the practice works on a time schedule governed by patients’ appointments, the work and general environment can become unpredictable at times.  Employee must be able to, both physically and emotionally, effectively handle the normal anxieties associated with the job.
