How does this role contribute to our collective success?
Data and analytics are of critical importance for AXIS. Simply put, we want to turn data into information that can be used to:

  • Enable decisions to be made with confidence, based on information not just intuition.

  • Be more proactive, using information to identify new opportunities and getting to them before our competitors.

The Data Science & AI team is a core component of AXIS's strategy, with the potential to transform the way in which we do business and enable us to effectively leverage data and technology to our competitive advantage. Our central mandate is to horizon-scan, prototype, and implement innovative solutions to business problems.

What will you do in this role?
As a Data Scientist with the Data Science & AI Delivery team, you will tackle complex, high-impact analytical challenges in the specialty (re)insurance industry. This is a hands-on role for someone who thrives on solving novel problems and building machine learning systems that drive real business outcomes.

Our work spans the full spectrum of modern data science from rigorous statistical modeling to deep learning, applied to problems where getting it right genuinely matters. You'll work on challenges that demand both mathematical sophistication and practical engineering judgment, in a domain rich with structured and unstructured data, uncertainty, and high-stakes decisions.

This role offers mentorship from experienced data scientists, clear growth opportunities, and hands-on exposure to cutting-edge AI technologies, including generative AI and advanced machine learning frameworks. You will have the chance to learn, experiment, and develop your skills in a collaborative environment.

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Developing machine learning and statistical models that directly influence business decisions and strategy—taking ownership from problem framing through to production deployment.

  • Identifying opportunities where advanced analytical approaches can create measurable value and exercising the judgment to know when simpler methods are the right answer.

  • Working closely with underwriters, actuaries, claims professionals, and business leaders to deeply understand problems

  • Designing and building robust, scalable ML pipelines using our core platforms (Databricks, Azure ML) that meet high reliability standards

  • Translating complex analytical insights into clear, actionable recommendations

  • Collaborating with our AI engineering team to integrate ML capabilities into broader intelligent systems and agentic solutions.

  • Exploring and evaluating new techniques, tools, and research

  • Developing your knowledge of the (re)insurance industry, AXIS's business structure, and the coverages we offer

  • Contributing to a culture of technical excellence, intellectual curiosity, and continuous learning, mentoring others and raising the bar for the team.

About You:
We encourage you to bring your own experience and expertise to the table, so while there are some qualifications and experiences, we need you to have, we are open to discussing how your individual knowledge might lend itself to fulfilling this role and help us achieve our goals.

What you need to have:

  • An advanced degree in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, Actuarial Science, or similar).

  • A track record of building and deploying production ML models that solve real-world problems at scale

  • Strong programming skills in Python and SQL.

  • The statistical maturity to move fluidly between classical and modern methods, choosing the right tool for the problem.

  • The ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Curiosity, intellectual honesty, and a bias toward action.

What we prefer you to have:

  • Familiarity with Databricks, Azure ML, or similar platforms.

  • Up to date knowledge of advancements in Generative AI / LLMs

  • Depth in areas such as probabilistic modeling, high performance numerical computing, or deep learning.

  • Experience with Azure DevOps and/or GitHub/GitLab

  • Exposure to insurance, reinsurance, financial services, or other domains where uncertainty quantification matters.

  • Technical data visualization skills

Role Factors:

  • In this role, you will typically be required to:

  • Engage in company activities to grow your network and build a strong team culture.

  • Attend your local office to meet and build relationships with colleagues and the wider business.
