Why This Role Matters:

The Staff Data Engineer at Group 1001 will serve as a key technical leader, defining strategies for data pipeline development and establishing standards for data warehouse design across the organization. This role is pivotal in shaping our data architecture and capabilities to support Group 1001's mission of delivering outstanding value in the insurance and annuity marketplace. This position requires 7-10 years of experience, working autonomously, defining problems and solutions to deliver organization-level impact. You will provide technical leadership across multiple teams. How You'll Contribute:

  • Define data engineering strategy and technical roadmap for the organization, balancing innovation with operational stability
  • Lead organization-wide initiatives to modernize data infrastructure, improve data quality, and enable self-service analytics
  • Establish standards and best practices for data engineering across multiple teams, ensuring consistency and quality
  • Partner with platform and infrastructure teams to optimize data systems for performance, cost, and scalability
  • Mentor senior engineers and technical leads, developing the next generation of data engineering leadership

What We're Looking For:

Technical Skills:

Advanced in Python, SQL, RDS, Snowflake, ETL/ELT, dbt/Coalesce, Airflow/Dagster, Data warehousing, Stream processing, and Data quality frameworks

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field
  • Master's degree or equivalent experience preferred

Experience:

  • 7-10 years of experience in data engineering or related field
  • Demonstrated experience defining technical strategy and driving organization-wide initiatives
  • Proven track record of leading complex, high-impact projects with broad organizational scope
  • Experience mentoring and developing senior engineers and technical leaders
  • Strong executive presence with ability to influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in insurance or financial services with deep understanding of industry challenges
  • Recognized expertise through conference presentations, publications, or industry speaking engagements
  • Experience with enterprise-scale systems and complex technical environments
  • Proven ability to build consensus and drive alignment across multiple teams and stakeholders
  • Track record of successful vendor partnerships and technology evaluations

  • Strategic vision with ability to define long-term technical direction aligned with business goals
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to develop and mentor senior technical talent
