Job Description

This full‑time position offers paid employment while completing a 9‑month Industrial Maintenance training program through the 1+2 Learn While You Earn Program. Participants earn $29.05 per hour while attending school and gaining hands‑on maintenance experience.

Upon successful completion of the program, the team member commits to a minimum of two (2) continuous years of full‑time employment in the Maintenance Department at the Dakota City facility.

The Maintenance Trainee is responsible for supporting continuous production by troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing industrial machinery and equipment used in beef processing operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain production machinery and industrial equipment

  • Perform work involving:

    • Mechanical systems

    • Hydraulics

    • Electrical systems (including 3‑phase and AC/DC control wiring)

    • Plumbing

    • Conveyor maintenance

    • Welding

    • Pneumatic systems

  • Set up, adjust, and break down production line equipment

  • Complete required maintenance documentation

  • Work independently with limited supervision

  • Follow all safety, food safety, and company policies

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand 10–12 hours per shift on hard surfaces

  • Frequent use of hands, gripping, and working above shoulder level

  • Ability to lift 0–75 lbs, with or without assistance

  • Work in all plant areas, including Harvest, Processing, Rendering, and Load‑out

  • Exposure to sights and smells associated with meat and food processing

  • Indoor and outdoor work in seasonal conditions

    • Temperatures ranging from below 32°F to over 90°F

    • Hot, humid, cold, damp, and slippery environments

  • Willingness to work C Shift, varied schedules, extended hours, and weekends as required

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.

  • Prior mechanical training or experience preferred

  • Must maintain a 2.0 GPA or higher during the training program

  •  Must have the necessary communication skills/ ability to understand instructions received via radio, the ability to read and comprehend written and verbal machine instructions, /work orders, and to correctly complete all job-related paperwork.

  • All applicants must successfully complete a mechanical aptitude assessment

    • Only candidates with passing scores will be considered

Candidates who have previously worked for Tyson have a 3-time limit and a waiting period of 180 days.
