Job Summary: This position is assigned to Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC); Fleet and Family Readiness (FFR) Division (N9); Child and Youth Programs (CYP) Branch (N926); NAS Whidbey Island. Incumbent serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator providing transportation services in support of CYP.

Major Duties:

  • Duties include but are not limited to: Drives vehicles on a regular and non-regular basis to various destinations as required to provide transportation services or other required movement of children in support of the overall CYP mission. Government vehicles may vary from sedans, station wagons, sport utility vehicles, or school/activity buses. Drives vehicles over Federal, state, and country roads through all traffic conditions depending upon the type of vehicle operated and the purpose for which it is operated. Keeps trips records and/or logs, showing time of departure, trip mileage, gasoline and oil consumptions, etc. Reports delays, defects in vehicle operations, accidents, damages, emergencies, or traffic violations to supervisor. Responsible for checking vehicle to make sure all patrons have removed their personal belongings and that all trash is removed at the end of the trip. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicle. Drives vehicles over pre-determined routes, arriving and departing at scheduled times. Operates doors to allow passengers to enter and leave the vehicle and help the passengers on other courteous ways when necessary. Responsible for maintaining decorum of all passengers, especially children, via the use of developmentally appropriate communication and positive guidance techniques. May personally load or assisting with loading and unloading of materials, supplies, or passengers Enforces conduct and safety rules. Responds to emergency and non-emergency situations. Ensures passenger safety. Transports children to and from school in the mornings and afternoon as required. Maintains supervision and accountability of all children at all times while working alone or while working as a team with CYP employees, volunteers, and/or contractors. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain valid State Driver's License and Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B or C with a Passenger endorsement. Knowledge of height, width, length and weight of vehicles in order to judge overhead and side clearances, turning radius, braking distance and the safe distance to be maintained from preceding vehicles. Knowledge to determine the shortest and safest route and be able to recognize hazardous conditions and change route to avoid these conditions. Knowledge of safety rules and regulations, also other posted rules for moving vehicles. Skill in handling the controls for starting, stopping, backing, and driving the vehicle in a safe manner. Skill to smoothly apply brakes and shift gears when necessary. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, and possess strong interpersonal communication skill.
