Course Description:
EDSL 330. Literacy 1:Teaching Reading in ESL.
Examines current literacy theory and practice, focusing on the teaching of reading skills for the comprehension and appreciation of texts in various genres, formats and functions, in ESL for elementary and secondary level students. Top-down and bottom-up reading processes; cultural and general background knowledge; knowledge of language including grammar and vocabulary are addressed.

Teaching Qualification Requirements:
Education
Master’s degree in Second Language Education or related to the course content (in exceptional circumstances applicants without a Master’s degree but with significant research or professional experience related to the course content may be considered)
Teaching degree or equivalent in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
PhD or equivalent in a relevant field is an asset
Experience
1. Expert knowledge of course content and ESL pedagogy as represented in current eCalendar description, including:
Current L2 literacy theory and practice
Teaching of L2 reading skills for the comprehension and appreciation of texts in various genres, formats and functions
Knowledge of the Quebec Education program (QEP)
2. Familiarity with the 13 professional competencies specified by the Ministère de l’Éducation
3. Experience teaching ESL in the Quebec elementary/secondary French school system
4. Previous successful experience teaching similar course(s) to pre-service teachers

Commitment to working with a team of committed and engaged instructors.
Must be available to attend course coordination and planning meeting minimum of 2 weeks in advance of course start date
Knowledge of the impact and proven record integrating pedagogical approaches anchored to equity, diversity and inclusion
Familiarity using myCourses, ZOOM and other similar online platforms to facilitate quality teaching and learning experiences
Familiarity teaching blended classes is an asset.
Familiarity with the application of a variety of digital and pedagogical teaching and learning tools.
