Ownwell

Corporate Counsel

Austin, TX Full Time

Company Background

Ownwell helps property owners reduce the costs of owning real estate. Our proprietary software automatically identifies property owners that are overpaying on real estate expenses. We then manage the end-to-end process of reducing bills through tax appeals, exemptions, and corrections.

Over $40 billion is overpaid in property taxes every year, and inaccurate tax assessments disproportionately affect people of color, immigrants, as well as low-income communities.

We’re dedicated to making the costs of property ownership more transparent and equitable. We believe that regardless of status or level of real estate expertise, everyone should have access to the information, tools, and resources to manage their real estate with confidence.

Ownwell is well-funded and venture-backed by some of the best investors in the world. Our customer base has grown by more than 1000% year-over-year with exceptional feedback demonstrating clear product market fit. We are looking for driven and passionate team members who thrive in a collaborative, positive culture where we all win together. If this sounds like the place for you, come help us change the way everyday homeowners manage their real estate across the country.

About the Role

We are seeking a versatile and business-minded Corporate Counsel to join our Legal team. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, you will serve as a key partner to our Leadership, Product, Engineering, and Operations teams. While the GC handles high-level governance and board matters, you will be the "engine room" of the legal department—tackling commercial contracts, navigating complex real estate regulations for new products, and managing external vendor relationships.

This is a high-impact role for a lawyer who enjoys rolling up their sleeves and solving problems in real-time. You will play a critical role in scaling our legal operations as we continue our rapid growth trajectory.

Responsibilities:

Product Counsel:

  • Partner closely with Leadership, Product, and Engineering teams to assess regulatory landscapes and legal risks in new product development.
  • Advise on consumer protection laws to ensure transparency and fairness in our customer-facing software.
  • Manage terms of service, privacy policies, and consumer disclosure requirements.

Regulatory Affairs & Licensing:

  • Liaise with state and local regulatory bodies, including Tax Assessor offices, Appraisal Boards, and TDLR.
  • Manage regulatory inquiries and audits, drafting responses to government agencies and resolving compliance issues proactively.
  • Oversee the company’s licensing portfolio, ensuring timely renewals and compliance with state-specific reporting requirements for real estate and tax consulting activities.

Commercial Contracts & Vendor Management:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate commercial agreements, including partnership agreements, vender, marketing contracts, and NDAs.
  • Build and maintain a contract management system to streamline the review process and track renewal dates.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for vendor management, ensuring we are effectively managing external legal counsel and operational vendors in a cost-effective manner.

Litigation & Tax Appeal Operations:

  • Assist the GC in managing the litigation docket, specifically regarding property tax appeals filed on behalf of customers.
  • Coordinate with external local counsel in various states to ensure tax appeal filings are accurate and timely.
  • Help develop strategies for dispute resolution and litigation avoidance.

General Corporate Support:

  • Assist with maintaining corporate subsidiary records and state filings.
  • Support the People team on employment matters, internal policies, and handbook updates.

Competencies

  • Mission Alignment: You care about Ownwell’s mission and making an impact for all types of property owners.
  • Experience: Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admission to a state bar. At least 5 years of years of relevant legal experience, preferably in the real estate or prop tech space or in a law firm advising clients on related matters.
  • Commercial Fluency: Strong experience drafting and negotiating commercial contracts (SaaS, vendors, partnerships) with minimal supervision.
  • Product Mindset: Ability to translate complex legal regulations into clear, actionable advice for product managers and engineers.
  • Operator Mentality: You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where you need to build processes from scratch, not just follow existing ones.
  • Prop-Tech Knowledge: Familiarity with real estate law, property tax, or fintech regulations is a strong plus.
  • Collaborative: Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust across cross-functional teams.
