Communications Student Worker -- GCU News (FWS/NFWS)

The Communications Student Worker will help the Office of Communications and Public Relations tell the compelling stories and events of the university through a variety of media, from written stories to photographs, video and social media. He or she also will assist the department with various clerical duties to enhance the department’s effectiveness.

* This position will be for Fall 2026, with a possibility of the communications student worker starting in late summer (mid to late August 2026), just before the semester starts.*

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Working collaboratively with the Communications team to produce, fact-check and/or coordinate a variety of electronic and printed communications vehicles targeted at students, faculty, staff, alumni and external audiences.
  • Writing news stories and news briefs for the GCU News public-facing website (news.gcu.edu) and the department’s newsletter, published seven times a week (five daily employee editions published at midday, along with one campus edition and one online edition). The Communications Student Worker also may contribute to GCU Magazine, published quarterly.
  • Assisting with clerical functions, such as the distribution of GCU Magazine around campus, photo archiving, compilation of the monthly report, updating calendars and maintenance of the GCU News website.
  • Shooting photographs and assisting with video, as needed, to enhance the team’s stories, which range from student life to academics and events.
  • Assisting with public relations opportunities, depending on the capabilities and interests of the applicant.
  • Coordinating with Compliance and other departments to document information contained in GCU News publications.
     

Equipment used:

The Communications Student Worker will use Microsoft Word, WordPress Block Editor, Adobe Photoshop, and video equipment to be determined.

Qualifications:

  • Professional writing, communication, broadcast or social media student preferred.
  • Strong reporting, interviewing and writing skills, with particular attention to accuracy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, internet navigation, a variety of internet browsers and internet tools.
  • Previous internship at a newspaper, magazine or public relations company a plus.
  • Familiarity with the university and its culture.
     

Experience/education:

Grand Canyon University is committed to a student-first policy. Therefore, all applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements to be considered for student employment:

  • Enrolled at GCU as a full-time student in a bachelor’s program or master’s program.
  • Retain a 2.0 GPA as a bachelor-level student or a 3.0 GPA as a master-level student.
  • Maintain good financial and academic (SAP) standing with the university.

You may be subject to termination if you fall below the minimum requirements.

Pay rate: Minimum wage
