DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
For almost 100 years, the mission of Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s Section of Surgical Sciences has been to provide the finest quality care to patients, solve surgical problems that change practice, and educate the next generation of health care providers.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Works with department leadership to design, develop and implement marketing and communication strategies.
• Designs, develops and implements communication strategies which enable department to accomplish desired goals with regards to peer departments, professional organizations, publication venues and funding agencies.
• Coordinates communication plans with other VU/VUMC entities.
• Ensures that communication efforts are coordinated and appropriate in support of current goals and objectives of the department and VUMC.
• Coordinates the development, implementation and maintenance of web site and provides technical direction to management in carrying out marketing plans.
• Manages and serves as editor for all internal and outbound marketing communications, including overall messaging, as well as coordination of publications with the marketing and communications plan and budget.
• Garners local and national media placements in conjunction with goals determined annually.
• Facilitate the process through which each strategy is defined as a project with explicit scope, deliverables, milestones, drivers, stakeholders and subject matter experts.
• Leads the creation, execution and measurement of communications plans that support marketing strategy. Coordinates resolution of project challenges by communicating effectively and professionally to leaders.
• Facilitates process discussions with leaders as appropriate. Participates in a team-based environment, providing support for programs and initiatives across the department.
• Develops, implements, and administers a variety of special projects and provides assistance to leaders when necessary and identifies methods and resources needed for successful project planning.
• Oversee the production of marketing, communication, advertising, and promotional materials for various programs.
• Write and edit news, feature articles, and special topics for university and medical center publications.
• Review program plans and materials with management and other appropriate individuals for feedback. Coordinate with other organizations as necessary to complete materials.
• May supervise a support staff including students, temporary employees, and community volunteers.
• Assign, plan, and review work of staff.
• Determine staffing needs and make other personnel recommendations.
