The University of Ottawa Library is looking for an innovative, motivated and service-oriented individual to fill the position of Collections Strategy Librarian (Replacement). The ideal candidate is a creative and adaptable person who works well with colleagues in a stimulating and changing environment.

At present, the position is focused particularly on collection maintenance for physical materials, collection analysis, and deselection projects.

Environment: The University of Ottawa is recognized nationally and internationally as one of the country's top research universities and the largest bilingual (French and English) university in the world.  Located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Anishinaabe-Algonquin people, in the heart of downtown Ottawa, it contributes to the economy, culture and quality of life of Canada's Capital.

Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to the Head, Collections Strategy, the incumbent works collaboratively within a team environment and contributes to group decision making and planning for the strategic development, management, and evaluation of the University of Ottawa Library’s collections across all subject areas and formats.

  • The incumbent contributes to the development of collection-related policies to ensure that the university community has access to world-class scholarly content and collections. These activities are informed by a deep understanding of current and emerging information needs of Library users, and evolving patterns in how users discover and engage with Library resources.

  • The Collections Strategy Librarian assesses, evaluates, and analyzes the Library collection, using quantitative and qualitative data, to support evidence-based decision making. This work may include managing large data sets across various systems.

  • The incumbent has a strong understanding of the shared collections landscape. They contribute to the University of Ottawa’s participation in shared initiatives by contributing to large scale collection development and analysis; identifying gaps and overlaps in our collection in conjunction with other libraries and initiatives.

  • The incumbent participates in a variety of projects, which may include, but are not limited to, collection maintenance, evaluations of major in-kind donations, annual subscription reviews, weeding projects, and the development and maintenance of approval plans.

  • The Librarian actively participates in and/or leads Library collaborative activities within the Library and across campus. The incumbent contributes to an evolving organization values service excellence, innovation, outreach, and partnership.

Term: This is an opportunity for a new 12-month replacement Librarian appointment beginning on June 15, 2026. The appointment may be renewable in accordance with the provisions of the APUO collective agreement.

Note: If librarians currently employed at the University of Ottawa are interested in this position, the possibility of an interim appointment would be available.

Salary: Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The expected hiring range for this position would normally be Rank I (salary starting at $73,098) or II (salary starting at $86,623) (As of May 1, 2025)

Required skills:

  • Education: A Master's degree in Library and Information Sciences (MLIS) from an institution that has been accredited by the American Library Association or equivalent.

  • Professional experience

• At least 2 years of related professional experience, or fewer if the experience is particularly pertinent to the position

• Effective oral and written communication skills in both French and English.

• Knowledge of collection development principles, practices and trends, e.g. licensing models, budget management, collection assessment, and consortial collection strategies.

• Knowledge of the scholarly communications and publishing landscape, and its relationship to collections strategy.

• Understanding of the role of library collections in supporting the academic mission of the university, and the diverse ways in which the collection is used.

• Advanced ability to use a variety of collection -related tools, systems, and datasets to conduct large scale collections assessment and analysis using various data sets.

•Strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret complex data from multiple sources and develop strategies to support evidence-based collections decisions.

• Ability to analyze complex issues and exercise sound judgement in decision making.

• Strong collaboration and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively in a team-based environment.

• Demonstrated adaptability, initiative and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and develop practical, innovative solutions.

• Project management experience, including planning, organizing, and managing resources to achieve objectives within a specific time frame is an asset.
