The Rolls-Royce Submarines business is a leading provider of submarine propulsion systems and fulfils the role of the Technical Authority for the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP) of the country's submarine fleet on behalf of the Ministry of Defence (MoD).   The Faslane Submarine base on the Clyde is the area that the Submarine Flotilla is operated and maintained.  The customer is looking to further improve efficiency and have setup the Clyde Innovation Cell (CIC) to help improve Submarine Availability, with some Rolls-Royce leadership.  The role is part of the Services Delivery Business Unit DBU and will be the link between the activity in the CIC and availability optimisation work predominantly in Derby.

The Clyde Innovation Cell Technical Manager is based at the Clyde Submarine Base and works on behalf of Superintendent Fleet Maintenance (SFM) . This person represents the company in a very demanding technical environment with high profile programs being influenced on the outputs of the CIC area.  The role forms part of an SDA coordinated team, Working closely with the MOD, Babcock Marine, BAE all major industry partner. 

What you will be doing:  

  • The CIC Technical Manager needs to be able to act independently and be ready to deal and manage the improvement issues in concert with the multiple agencies involved the delivery of maintenance on all ships systems including the upkeep of the Nuclear Steam Raising Plant (NSRP).  

  • Leading and directing a team of Rolls-Royce engineers to help deliver the objectives outlined above.

  • You will need to have a track record of achievement in work associated with the NSRP. You will need to demonstrate strong people skills, including an ability to influence and lead a team collaboratively.

  • You will proactively drive for results, demonstrate creativity in problem solving, be comfortable with ambiguity, have strong planning and organisational skills and be comfortable challenging processes.  The Clyde Innovation Cell looks at all aspects of maintenance on the vessel

Position Qualifications

  • Detailed knowledge of the propulsion systems, NSRP and Ships systems 
  • Having the ability look outside the normal working ways to bring in new knowledge/methods to deliver maintenance requirements
  • Experience and or understanding of the Inservice Submarines (ISM) Design Authorities (DA) structure would also be advantageous within this role
  • Multiple stakeholder management skills (internal/external)
  • Ability to define vague requirements with good communications
  • Development of new capabilities
  • Proven people management. 

It is desirable that the candidate has a good knowledge of how the Naval base operates and be familiar the organisations that deliver the key activities.
