Cloud Engineer – AWS

Job Objective
We are seeking a skilled Cloud Engineer to join our global cloud operations team.
This role will be responsible for supporting, troubleshooting, and optimizing CIGNA’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) environments across multiple regions, ensuring secure, compliant, and highly available cloud services for our international business units.
The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with CIGNA’s Cloud Center of Excellence, security, and application teams, as well as Microsoft’s Unified Support and engineering resources.
The successful candidate will have an initial secondment in a highly skilled and experienced project team where they will assist in deployment of the solution and then transition into support and business-as-usual (BAU) operations, ensuring the stability, performance, and continuous improvement of deployed cloud environments.
This position will collaborate with Azure, OCI, and on-premise engineering teams, offering opportunities for cross-training and professional development within a multi-cloud and hybrid infrastructure environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Deployment Project (initial secondment)
- Work as a Subject Matter Expert with the architecture team to design the cloud infrastructure to the highest security and supportability levels. Setting out the ongoing support requirements on day 1.
- Design, deploy, and manage scalable, secure, and resilient cloud infrastructure on AWS.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, and Git.
- Implement Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform for consistent and automated provisioning.
- Collaborate with development and operations teams to automate cloud provisioning and configuration.
- Monitor AWS environments for performance, cost optimization, and security compliance.
- AWS Platform Support:
- Provide Tier 2/3 support for AWS infrastructure, services, and workloads (EC2, S3, IAM, Lambda, VPC, CloudFormation, and CloudWatch, security and monitoring).
- Troubleshoot incidents, perform root cause analysis, and drive timely resolution of issues impacting business operations.
- Manage AWS subscriptions, resource groups, RBAC, and policy compliance in line with CIGNA’s global standards.
- Operational Excellence:
- Monitor system health, performance, and cost optimisation using AWS CloudWatch, CloudTrail, and AWS Cost Explorer.
- Implement and maintain backup, disaster recovery, and high-availability configurations.
- Support automation and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) initiatives (e.g., Bash, Terraform, PowerShell).
- Security & Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with CIGNA’s security, privacy, and regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, GDPR, local data residency).
- Support implementation of security controls, vulnerability management, and incident response in AWS.
- Collaborate with security and compliance teams to maintain and audit cloud controls.
- Collaboration & Escalation:
- Work closely with CIGNA’s application, data, and DevOps teams to support deployments and resolve cross-functional issues.
- Serve as a liaison with Amazon Support and escalate critical incidents as needed.
- Participate in global on-call rotation and support coverage for international time zones.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Contribute to documentation, runbooks, and knowledge base articles for AWS operations.
- Participate in post-incident reviews and drive process improvements.
- Stay current with AWS platform updates, best practices, and emerging technologies.
Required Skills & Experience
- Proven enterprise-level skills, including governance processes.
- Strong knowledge of CI/CD concepts and hands-on experience with Azure DevOps, Git, and containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
- Proficiency in Terraform for infrastructure provisioning and management.
- Familiarity with scripting languages such as Python, Bash, or PowerShell.
- Understanding of cloud security principles and identity/access management.
- Experience with monitoring and logging tools (e.g., Dynatrace, Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk).
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
- Experience of working with ServiceNow, JIRA and Confluence
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS certifications (e.g., AWS Certified Solutions Architect, DevOps Engineer).
- Experience with multi-cloud environments (AWS and Azure).
- Knowledge of Agile methodologies and DevSecOps practices.
