The Cloud Engineer (L2) provides intermediate-level support, administration, and troubleshooting of cloud and hybrid infrastructure across Microsoft Azure (and other cloud providers) and related networking, compute, storage, and security components. This role bridges traditional infrastructure knowledge with modern cloud capabilities, supporting clients through migration, daily operations, incident resolution, and proactive environment management.

The primary objective is to ensure service stability, minimize downtime, meet all SLA commitments, and assist in delivering cloud solutions following best practices. The Cloud Engineer (L2) handles medium-complexity incidents, contributes to deployments, engages in proactive monitoring, and collaborates with senior engineers during escalations.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Cloud Operations & Monitoring

- Ensure Azure infrastructure is configured, installed, tested, monitored, and fully operational.

- Monitor cloud resources using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, alerts, and observability tools.

- Respond to alerts, perform health checks, and ensure system resource availability.

- Implement and manage backup, patching, update, and cloud security controls.

Incident & Problem Management

- Troubleshoot L2 support incidents for cloud and hybrid environments.

- Diagnose issues related to compute, networking, storage, identity, and PaaS services.

- Take full ownership of assigned incidents to resolution within SLA timelines.

- Escalate to L3 Engineering or vendors when required and track until closure.

- Maintain accurate, detailed tickets and communication with stakeholders.

Cloud Networking Support

- Configure and maintain Azure (and other cloud providers) networking components (VNETs, NSGs, UDRs, VPN/ExpressRoute, DNS, Load Balancers).

- Assist with hybrid networking (Cisco, SD-WAN, routing, switching).

- Support connectivity troubleshooting across on-prem and cloud environments.

Deployments & Enhancements

- Participate in deployments, upgrades, and migrations to Azure (and other cloud providers).

- Support application and infrastructure rollout activities.

- Conduct routine maintenance, optimisation, performance tuning, and remediation tasks.

- Contribute to IaC-based deployments using PowerShell, AZ CLI, ARM/Bicep.

Customer Engagement & Collaboration

- Provide remote and on-site operational support.

- Deliver feedback, updates, and recommendations to customers and senior engineers.

- Work closely with Customer Success, Cloud Architects, and Engineering teams.

- Engage in proactive trend analysis, capacity planning, and environment improvements.

Documentation & Reporting

- Update runbooks, knowledge articles, diagrams, and deployment documentation.

- Produce incident, breach, and operational health reports.

- Recommend enhancements to processes, procedures, and tools.

Technical Skills & Knowledge (L2 Expected Proficiency)

Azure Cloud

- Azure Compute (VMs, Scale Sets)

- Azure Storage

- Azure Networking (VNETs, NSGs, DNS, Load Balancers, VPN/ER)

- Azure Monitor, App Insights, Log Analytics

- Azure AD fundamentals

- Azure Backup, Azure Update Manager

- PaaS fundamentals: Web Apps, Function Apps, Databases (SQL/ MySQL)

Infrastructure & Networking

- Windows Server administration

- Basic Linux familiarity

- Hyper-V / VMware experience

- Routing, switching, VLANs

- Firewalls, load balancers, WAN technologies

- Cisco / Meraki / SD-WAN exposure

Automation & Scripting

- PowerShell, Bash, AZ CLI

- Bicep, ARM Templates

- Understanding of DevOps & CI/CD concepts (Azure DevOps advantageous)

Tooling & ITSM

- ServiceNow or similar ITSM platform

- Monitoring platforms (Azure Monitor, Meraki Dashboard, vendor tools)

Qualifications

Required

- Secondary qualification (Matric / High School)

- Diploma or Degree in Computer Science / IT (or equivalent experience)

- Microsoft AZ-104: Azure Administrator (required)

- AZ-900: Azure Fundamentals

- 4–6 years IT experience

- At least 2+ years hands-on cloud experience (Azure preferred)

- Strong experience supporting enterprise infrastructure

Preferred / Advantageous

- AZ-700 (Azure Network Engineer Associate)

- AZ-500, AZ-204, or other Azure certifications

- Cisco CCNA/CCNP (Routing & Switching, Meraki, or SD-WAN)

- AWS Cloud Practitioner or AWS Networking

- Google Cloud Certification

- Experience with Kubernetes, Docker, Helm

- Experience with Prisma Cloud or other cloud security tools

- ITIL Foundation certification
