Job Description Summary

The Chief of Human Performance Innovation (CHPI) will be the visionary and strategic leader responsible for the overall direction, development, and success of MUSC Health's comprehensive human performance initiative. This executive will establish and grow a world-class, financially sustainable program that integrates cutting-edge science, data analytics, and human-centered principles to optimize the health, wellness, and performance of a diverse population, from elite athletes and military personnel to the tactical professional and the general community.

For the Human Performance initiative to achieve its ambitious goals, it must be established as a major strategic enterprise within the MUSC Health system, led by an executive with the authority, influence, and resources to drive collaboration across major universities, create new partnerships with external leaders, and develop sustainable clinical and research opportunities.

Reporting Structure
• Reports to: Chief Operating Officer (or Chief Physician Executive), MUSC Health.
• Direct Reports: Will build and lead a multidisciplinary team, potentially including: Director of Operations, Director of Research & Innovation, Lead Sports Scientists, Partnership Managers, and clinical leads.
• Academic Appointment: This role is positioned on the health system side but will maintain a strong, synergistic relationship with the academic enterprise, including holding an academic appointment in a relevant department (e.g., Professor of Orthopaedics).

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions

1. Strategic Leadership & Vision:
• Develop and execute a comprehensive 5-year strategic plan to establish two anchor sites within the state (MUSC-Clemson Human Performance Lab and MUSC Charleston-based Human Performance Center).
• Define the program's unique value proposition and brand identity in the competitive landscape.
• Serve as the public face and chief advocate for the initiative, representing it to internal stakeholders, external partners, donors, and the media.
• Ensure the financial viability and growth of the human performance service line through diverse revenue streams, including clinical services, corporate partnerships, and research grants.

2. Partnership Development & Management:
• Act as the executive lead for the MUSC-Clemson partnership, ensuring alignment of goals, resource sharing, and achievement of joint milestones.
• Work in close partnership with the Chief of Health, Wellness, and Human Performance ICCE.
• Cultivate and formalize strategic alliances with professional sports teams (e.g., Charleston Battery, RiverDogs), collegiate athletic departments (College of Charleston, The Citadel), and specialized military units (Joint Base Charleston).
• Lead negotiations and manage relationships with international partners, such as the Barça Innovation Hub, to facilitate knowledge exchange, joint research, and global brand recognition.
• Develop a robust corporate wellness and performance consulting arm to serve regional businesses.

3. Program Development & Operations:
• Oversee the design and implementation of innovative, evidence-based human performance programs and clinical services.
• Champion a "Human-Centered" approach, ensuring that all services are tailored to the unique physiological, psychological, and contextual needs of the individual.
• Integrate services across the MUSC Health enterprise, creating seamless care pathways with Orthopaedics, Physical Therapy, Cardiology, Nutrition, and Primary Care.
• Establish state-of-the-art performance labs and clinical facilities, ensuring they are equipped with the latest technology for assessment, monitoring, and intervention.

4. Research & Innovation:
• Foster a culture of inquiry and innovation, bridging the gap between clinical practice and cutting-edge research.
• Leverage the MUSC-Clemson AI Hub to build a powerful data analytics infrastructure, using predictive modeling to prevent injury and optimize performance.
• Drive a research agenda that results in high-impact publications, national presentations, and successful grant funding.
• Create a "living laboratory" environment where new technologies, methodologies, and interventions can be developed, tested, and validated.

5. Academic & Faculty Responsibilities:
• Maintain an academic appointment (e.g., Professor of Orthopaedics), contributing to the educational mission of MUSC.
• Mentor faculty, fellows, and students.
• Participate in relevant academic committees and contribute to the intellectual life of the university.

Job Description

Qualifications & Requirements
  • Education: A terminal degree (MD, PhD, or equivalent) in a relevant field such as sports medicine, exercise science, biomechanics, or a related discipline. An MBA or equivalent business acumen is highly desirable.

  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in an academic medical center, university, professional sports organization, or military performance program.

    • Demonstrated success in building and scaling new programs or service lines.

    • Proven track record of securing and managing major strategic partnerships (academic, corporate, and/or government).

    • Strong financial acumen with experience managing a P&L.

    • An established national/international reputation in a field related to human performance, with a strong record of research and publication.

    • Experience that is commensurate with appointment at the rank of Professor.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent, and 10 years of progressive experience including 8 years in management/leadership roles.
