Cell Bank Technician

The Opportunity:

In this role, you will report to the and will work closely with the Avantor’s Advanced Laboratory Services professionals to serve our customers by performing customized, mission-based lab work and research protocols that help return time back to science.

Location: Waltham, MA (position moving to Cambridge, MA)

Shift: Mon – Fri, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm

Hourly Rate: $27 - $29

What we’re looking for 

Education:

  • High School diploma or GED required; Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline preferred.

Experience:

  • 1–2 years of lab experience (undergraduate lab work accepted).

  • Hands-on laboratory experience, preferably in a cell culture or cryopreservation environment.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel; LIMS experience a plus.

  • Experience with SOPs and quality/safety protocols.

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently.

  • Team-oriented with a proactive mindset.

  • Able to lift 40 lbs.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills with a keen attention to detail.

Avantor’s Advanced Laboratory Services team is a crucial part of the Avantor Services group serving over 500 customers in biopharma, pharmaceutical, educational, industrial, and high-tech industries with customizable, flexible solutions and end-to-end laboratory operations support.

We are seeking a detail‑oriented and motivated Cell Bank Technician to support onsite Cell Banking operations in Waltham, MA, with a planned relocation to Cambridge, MA in mid‑2026. This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to scientific research through hands‑on operational support within a controlled laboratory environment.

In this role, you will play a key part in the safe and efficient management of cryopreserved cell lines housed within an access-restricted liquid nitrogen area. You will work closely with the Cell Banking team and other onsite scientific staff to ensure accurate storage, tracking, and delivery of cell lines to internal and external stakeholders.

Beyond daily operations, you will troubleshoot logistical or technical issues, participate in improvement projects, and support the implementation of new procedures and equipment. Safety, compliance, and operational excellence are central to this position.

  • Create daily pick lists for requested cell lines.

  • Retrieve and transport cell lines to designated drop-off locations, including materials for external shipment.

  • Receive incoming cell line shipments and prepare outgoing shipments according to established procedures.

  • Return newly grown cell lines to the Cell Bank.

  • Manually handle cryotank racks to select and prepare cell lines for delivery.

  • Use Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), such as Limfinity, for accurate tracking and documentation.

  • Coordinate with internal services teams to ensure adequate stock of consumables and PPE.

  • Monitor and manage liquid nitrogen dewars connected to cryo freezers.

  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and compliance within all Cell Bank areas.

  • Identify, document, and report safety concerns or incidents.

  • Recommend and support continuous improvement activities to enhance workflows and operational reliability.

  • Manage inventory related to Cell Banking (e.g., cell boxes, cryoshippers, cryopods).

Pay Transparency:

The expected pre-tax pay for this position is

$50,000.00 - $80,500.00

Actual pay may differ depending on relevant factors such as prior experience and geographic location.
