What’s the role
Shell is seeking a Category Manager for Tobacco & Lottery to join its team at the Calgary Bow Building.
This category is one of the most critical within Shell Mobility & Convenience. As a Category Manager, you will be responsible for establishing the vision and strategy plans, focusing on actionable category and market insights that deliver a differentiated Customer Value Proposition (CVP) for our customers, drive increased business performance for Shell, and create a competitive advantage within the Convenience and Gas channel.
This role covers the tobacco and lottery categories. The candidate will work alongside a dynamic, professional team across Category Management, Store Format, Marketing, Network Development, and Convenience Retail (CR) Business Development, while collaborating closely with Contracting and Procurement, Sales and Operations, and key global and local stakeholders to leverage learnings and drive profitable portfolio growth.
In addition, this role is responsible for leading category management strategies and plans, with a specific emphasis on industry-leading sales, integrated margin, and market share delivery. Using fact-based decision-making, the candidate must demonstrate strong skills in vendor management, contract negotiations, dynamic pricing, market trend analysis, consumer behavior, and understanding the competitive marketplace.
Accountabilities:
Lead development and execution of category strategies, including assortment planning, promotional calendars (lottery), pricing initiatives, and new product introductions to drive both sales and profitability in line with Shell Mobility & Convenience Vision and CR strategy
Serve as the subject matter expert for Cigarettes, Tobacco, Other Tobacco Products (OTPs), and Lottery, guiding innovation and maintaining competitive positioning
Implement and manage pricing strategies balancing volume objectives with margin goals. Negotiate promotional funding & allowances with manufacturers and vendors
Work alongside Contracts & Procurement to negotiate end-to-end contracts securing favourable terms for Shell and managing the full contract lifecycle
Establish and maintain strategic vendor relationships, monitoring performance and resolving inventory issues, delivery or quality issues. Serve as primary liaison to manufacturers and vendors, leading negotiations on costs, rebates, programs, and promotional terms
Deliver year on year integrated growth (organic and new) in sales, margin, and income
Manage the category’s P&L, track key metrics (sales, margins, market share), and generate reports/dashboards for leadership. Analyze consumer insights and syndicated sales data to inform assortment optimization and pricing decisions
Ensure compliance with all federal, provincial, and local regulations governing tobacco & lottery products, including age-restricted sales and labeling. Respond to changing regulatory requirements in collaboration with legal, compliance, and operations teams
Provide sales & operations support: troubleshoot on-shelf issues, assist in-store teams, and communicate best practices to field leadership. Conduct store visits with field staff to evaluate planogram compliance and collect operational feedback
What you bring
Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
Bachelor’s degree in business, Marketing, or related field
At least 5 years of experience in category management, preferably in tobacco, lottery, or regulated products
Knowledge of regulatory environments governing tobacco and lottery sales
Must have a solid grasp of retail fundamentals, including purchasing, assortment planning, merchandising, convenience retail operations, and expertise in pricing architecture
Robust analytical skills and proficiency in Excel, Power BI, or other data tools with deep customer understanding and a consumer-led mindset
Excellent negotiation, communication, relationship and contract & partner management skills
Proven skills in prioritization and time management, with the capacity to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation abilities
Must be willing to work from the Calgary office
Must have a valid driver’s license with clean abstract, as travel across Canada may be required
