DOW

Campus Internship 2025 - 2026 - Analytical Chemistry

Stade (DEU) Full time

At Dow, we believe in putting people first and we’re passionate about delivering integrity, respect and safety to our customers, our employees and the planet.

Our people are at the heart of our solutions. They reflect the communities we live in and the world where we do business. Their diversity is our strength. We’re a community of relentless problem solvers that offers the daily opportunity to contribute with your perspective, transform industries and shape the future. Our purpose is simple - to deliver a sustainable future for the world through science and collaboration. If you’re looking for a challenge and meaningful role, you’re in the right place.

About you and this role:

We are looking for you, an ambitious master's student (m/f/d) in analytical chemistry or chemistry to support our Analytical Operations Department by doing an internship project in the field of analysis of fluorinated compounds in complex matrices for our location in Stade, Germany.

Dow is offering great career opportunities in a global and international environment. The department that will welcome you is the Non Routine Analytical team, part of Analytical Operations, supporting Dow's production sites with advanced analytical problem-solving. We are a small, specialized team located at Stade, focused on method development and implementation of innovative analytical techniques for complex industrial challenges.

Project Description:

The reliable detection and quantification of fluorinated compounds in complex industrial matrices remains a significant analytical challenge. Current standardized methods primarily address fluorine-related measurements in common aqueous matrices such as drinking water, surface water, or groundwater, while validated approaches for complex matrices with e.g. high ionic strength are still limited.

This project focuses on the development and implementation of various analytical methodologies for the detection of adsorbable organic fluorine (AOF), extractable organic fluorine (EOF), total fluorine, and fluoride. To this end, a range of analytical techniques will be employed, including Ion Chromatography (IC), Combustion Ion Chromatography (C-IC), and — where applicable — Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). Emphasis will be placed on method optimization, validation, and the development of suitable sample preparation strategies for diverse complex matrices.

You will work closely within a highly skilled analytical team, gaining hands-on experience in advanced analytical techniques and method development under direct project guidance.

Qualifications:

  • You are currently studying for a master's degree or equivalent in Analytical Chemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Chemistry, or a related discipline.
  • You are fluent in German and have good working knowledge of English.
  • You have basic knowledge in chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques (e.g., IC, HPLC, GC-MS etc.).
  • You have experience in laboratory work, including sample preparation and handling of chemical substances.
  • A more than basic experience level in Microsoft Excel© is expected.
  • Experience with complex matrix analysis and/or fluorine chemistry and trace-level detection of fluorinated compounds is a plus.

Dow's internships offer you the opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on experience in advanced analytical methods such as Combustion Ion Chromatography (C-IC) and other techniques.
  • Explore the relation between academic theory and industrial analytical applications in a real-world production environment.
  • Explore Career Opportunities — by working in the field you have chosen, you will receive an inside look at your potential career path as an analytical chemist.
  • Network — meet a variety of people in your chosen profession through your internship, allowing you to form relationships you can build on in the future.

You can start between October 2026 – January 2027 for a period of 3–6 months (exact timing to be discussed).
