This position will serve as the Farm Assistant for DPF 4-H Camp, a residential summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Nassau County, located in Riverhead, New York. The primary responsibilities of this position will include, but not be limited to: assisting with providing upkeep of camp farm grounds and buildings as directed. This position will work with the Farm Supervisor and Camp Director and camp staff to ensure the safety for all. This position accepts and performs all position duties outlined in this position description, and performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the DPF 4-H Camp Director and/or Team Leader. (NOTE: This position does not include cabin responsibilities but may bunk in with campers.)
Required Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Desire, ability and willingness to work in a camp community/outdoor environment.
- Ability to work flexible hours which will include evenings and weekends, as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge/experience with safely using farm equipment, including tractor, mower, and weed whip operation and safety.
- Demonstrated knowledge/experience in one or all of the following areas: vegetable production, animal care, or general construction.
- Knowledge/experience with CSA (Community Supported Agriculture).
- Ability to accept direction, guidance and supervision.
- Good character, sense of human, patience and self-control.
Responsibilities/Essential Functions
Administrative Responsibilities- 95%
- Assist in the upkeep of farm buildings and grounds (cleaning, mowing, weed whipping, painting, etc.) to maintain a safe and neat looking facilit.
- Perform planting, weeding and harvesting of vegetables.
- Collection of eggs and preparing for sale.
- Care and feeding of animals.
- Make repairs and/or alterations as needed to farm facilities and/or grounds.
- Assist in conducting daily inspections to ensure equipment is safe, clean and in good repair.
- Dispose of garbage and/or recyclables as needed.
- Assist in conducting inventory of equipment and supplies as a part of end-of-season inventory as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned and/or reassigned as directed/required by the Farm Supervisor and/or Camp Director.
Professional Improvement - 5%
- Attend DPF 4-H Camp orientation/training program, and participate in staff meetings and required training events as scheduled.
- In cooperation with Supervisor and/or Executive Director jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan as a means to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and to address changes in programming and association priorities.
- Collaborate in activities that are in general support of Cornell Cooperative Extension including but not limited to attendance at staff meetings, timely reporting of expenses, working with other staff, general marketing of Extension programs and other duties as assigned.
Health and Safety-Applied to all duties and functions.
- Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.
- Be familiar and strive to follow any applicable federal, state, local regulations, association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement and standard.
- Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.
POSITION DETAILS:
This is an exempt, full-time position, 100% FTE. The salary will range from $2,850 to $3,325 commensurate with experience.
