Code for America is looking for a talented Bilingual Content Design Manager (English-Spanish) who will:
- Establish a replicable bilingual content-design process across all programs. Define and validate bilingual content design processes that can be used across program areas. Content Design at Code for America includes UX writing, content strategy, plain-language editorial, and multilingual content systems.
- Launch and maintain English/Spanish content standards integrated into the design system.
- Increase English and Spanish-language content quality and accessibility metrics. You'll be setting the quality bar for bilingual content design at scale. Consistently helping teams meet client needs and policy intent, sharing their work widely within the organization.

As part of the Design team, Content Design is essential to the success of the products and services Code for America creates, crafting impactful messaging and content as part of our user experience practice across all touchpoints. As the inaugural Content Design Manager at Code for America, you will help develop the Content Design discipline, developing and implementing team operations, processes, and tooling for multilingual content. You will lead and mentor a small team while remaining hands-on as a staff bilingual content designer (70% IC / 30% leadership) working with cross-functional Code for America teams.
You will also work alongside other design managers as your peers, as well as managers in Engineering, Product, Data Science, Qualitative Research, and Client Success departments. Together, you will work to grow and support high-performing teams that drive better outcomes in public service delivery, including food assistance, tax credits, criminal record clearance, and more. You will contribute to team culture, and define best practices for doing content design that is inclusive and accessible for English and Spanish U.S. Latine audiences.
This role will report to a Design Manager and is expected to travel no more than 10% of the time.
Code for America is based in California and can employ those who reside full-time within the United States. This is a remote position.
In this position you will:
- People Management:
- Lead goal setting, performance reviews, and regular check-ins to ensure high team performance and professional growth.
- Manage and mentor your direct reports to foster career development, morale, and a supportive, inclusive environment.
- Manage contracts, SOWs, and allocations of contract content designers and/or copywriters.
- Collaborate with Design leadership to foster a dynamic and equity-centered design culture, and develop our design practice and capabilities.
- Advocate for Content Design needs by partnering cross-functionally with your peers in Client Success, Data Science, Qualitative Research, Engineering, Product, and Programs to ensure content design is being leveraged to improve products, services, and client outcomes across the organization.
- Support the recruitment and onboarding of new members of the Design team.
- Identify Content Design skills and capacity gaps.
- Advise senior leadership on headcount forecasts and advocate for team hiring as necessary to ensure sustained effectiveness.
- Content Systems and Quality:
- Lead content design direction in the teams in which you are staffed.
- Craft clear, concise and compelling content in both English and Spanish within our products, services and/or communications (e.g. text messages, notices, flyers, outreach copy, and other client facing materials)
- Review and ensure quality of content in both English and Spanish to meet partner expectations, and provide the best experience for our clients.
- Oversee the development and execution of content that meets a high-quality standard. Review content deliverables and provide feedback that advances the craft of your reports.
- Draft and ratify content and UX copywriting guidelines in English and Spanish that meet our project needs while addressing accessibility and legibility standards.
- Manage and oversee bilingual systems, ensuring linguistic and cultural quality via style guides, translators, or contractors
- Use evidence, data, and research to explain content decisions to stakeholders on the team you are staffed.
- Content Operations:
- Create and operationalize a viable end-to-end bilingual content process that establishes protocols and tooling while maintaining flexibility for unique project considerations.
- Design System Integration:
- Establish a collaboration model to consistently and impactfully flow content guidelines into our Design System.

About you:
- Experience and Expertise:
- You have 6+ years of experience in content creation, strategy, or related fields, with a history demonstrating excellence in copywriting, content strategy, and content design.
- 2+ years of experience managing, coaching, or mentoring other designers.
- High fluency in written and spoken Spanish.
- Experience crafting and quality assuring content in Spanish and English.
- Content Design Practice:
- Experience in balancing linguistic neutrality with cultural resonance when writing content for products or services in different languages.
- Proven track record in cultivating content strategies that drive engagement, accessibility, and support organizational missions.
- Experience defining and tracking content quality metrics, project KPIs, and translating data into actionable content design decisions.
- A portfolio of relevant content design work with strong examples of your work, design process, and role.
- Experience mentoring content designers and communicating the value of content design to stakeholders and cross-functional partners.
- Experience managing multiple high-priority initiatives, including early-stage products or services as well as delivery of tactical and incremental improvements.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Excellent facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to guide diverse, remote, and cross-disciplinary teams using modern collaboration tools (such as Slack, Miro, or similar platforms);
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex ideas into clear, compelling content using plain language and accessibility standards that resonate with varied audiences.
- Technical and Tool Proficiency:
- Familiarity with industry-standard content and collaboration tools, including CMS platforms, digital publishing tools, and analytics software.
- An understanding of agile, iterative work methodologies and their application to content development processes.
- Familiarity with common content-design and collaboration tools (e.g., Figma, Miro, CMS platforms).
It’s a bonus if you have:
- Prior experience in government services, public policy, or civic tech, particularly within the social impact sphere.
- Experience managing content for accessibility or with a focus on inclusivity and diversity.
- Background in data-driven content creation, working with quantitative research teams or data scientists.
- Active participation in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives within previous roles.
- Experience with design systems or content libraries, ensuring consistency across digital touchpoints.

Salary:
Code for America’s salary bands are transparent as a part of our commitment to transparency and fairness. As part of our hiring practices, we aim to target the midpoint of the 2nd quartile of the range for all new hires.
Offer targets vary based on market / geographic location. The offer targets for this role range from $128,945 to $157,850, annually.
