What we want 

Reporting to the Associate Provost for Academic Enhancement, the Associate Vice President for Artificial Intelligence (AVP‑AI) will coordinate Texas A&M University’s institution-wide strategy for artificial intelligence, advancing its responsible use across teaching, research, and operations. Working within the Office of the Provost, the AVP‑AI will coordinate cross‑disciplinary AI initiatives, foster collaboration among academic and administrative units, and identify opportunities for AI to enhance institutional effectiveness. The role engages broadly with faculty, staff, and students to support innovation, workforce development, and the university’s strategic priorities.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ten (10) years of administrative experience.

  • Technical expertise in foundational AI and/or the application of state-of-the-art AI/ML models broadly, or equivalent professional experience.

  • A substantiated commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and teaching excellence.

  • Familiarity with the landscape of AI governance, policy, and ethics in higher education.

  • A track record of building and sustaining partnerships between academia and industry.

  • Evidence of mentoring and developing talent across career stages.

  • Evidence of collaboration across disciplines, organizations, or sectors.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in an AI-adjacent discipline.

  • A distinguished record of scholarship, innovation, or leadership related to artificial intelligence, data science, or digital technologies.

  • Experience contributing to premier AI/ML forums, conferences, publications, or policy discussions.

  • Experience at a large public research university or comparable institution.

  • Practical experience and a demonstrable history of aligning diverse stakeholders to execute transformative strategic initiatives across complex organizations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in leading AI initiatives in education, including program management, development of AI-based tools, or research on AI in education.

  • Demonstrated connections with prominent AI industry organizations (e.g., through collaborative research, advisory roles, consulting, or technology transfer).

  • Demonstrated leadership experience in academic, research administration, or industry settings.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and lead a university wide vision for artificial intelligence that aligns with Texas A&M’s mission and strategic plan.

  • Advise senior university leadership on emerging AI opportunities, risks, governance, and policy considerations.

  • Coordinate and elevate institutional strategy for AI across academic, research, and operational domains.

  • Serve as Texas A&M’s strategic AI ambassador, representing the university at national and international academic forums, policy roundtables, and public symposia.

  • Promote the university’s AI leadership, expertise, and infrastructure to external partners and thought-leadership communities.

Governance and Coordination

  • Establish and coordinate a cross functional AI governance structure connecting academic units, research institutes, and administrative divisions, including TAMIDS, the Center for Teaching Excellence, and other campuswide AI efforts.

  • Lead the coordination of AI-related initiatives across campus to identify collaboration opportunities, reduce duplication, and maximize institutional impact.

  • Engage students, faculty, and staff to surface AI-related needs, challenges, and emerging opportunities across the university.

  • Strengthen and expand institutional frameworks for responsible AI use, including ethics, data governance, academic integrity, and regulatory compliance, ensuring consistent application across teaching, research, and operations.

  • Develop processes and feedback mechanisms that support continuous improvement and scalability of AI programs, initiatives, and governance practices.

Education and Workforce Development

  • Champion the integration of AI literacy and fluency across undergraduate, graduate, and professional curricula.

  • Collaborate with academic and administrative partners to develop role-based AI training and professional development opportunities for students, staff, and faculty.

  • Promote innovative teaching practices that leverage AI to enhance learning outcomes and instructional effectiveness.

  • Support faculty and students in addressing challenges related to responsible AI use, academic integrity, assessment, and learning design in the era of generative AI.

  • Contribute to quality assurance and accreditation processes for AI-integrated academic programs, including evaluating learner outcomes and program effectiveness.

Research and Innovation

  • Partner with the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) to support the development of large-scale AI research initiatives, major grant proposals, and strategic interdisciplinary projects.

  • Strengthen and coordinate strategic partnerships with industry, national laboratories, and leading research organizations to expand opportunities for collaborative research, translational innovation, and technology transfer.

  • Work collaboratively with OVPR and other units to identify emerging research opportunities and position the university as a leader in AI-driven discovery and innovation.

Infrastructure and Resources

  • Collaborate with Technology Services and other campus partners to guide institutional decisions related to AI platform provisioning, licensing, and data governance.

  • Work closely with Information Technology, OVPR, and additional stakeholders to advocate for sustainable investments in AI infrastructure, including high-performance computing (e.g., DGX SuperPOD), institutional data platforms, and related technologies.

  • Support the development and maturation of an AI competency center or equivalent structure to provide campus-wide expertise, resources, and coordinated support.

  • Contribute to strategic guidance on scaling computing resources and technical capabilities to meet institutional needs for research, instruction, and operations involving AI.
