Associate Software Engineer

Los Angeles, CA, Remote Full time
Associate Software Engineer

ClubLabs is the digital acceleration team for Automobile Club of Southern California, also known as, AAA. We are the team responsible for building intuitive customer experiences across the organization’s insurance, membership, financial, emergency roadside, and travel services. We’re a team of engineers, designers, researchers and product managers within AAA delivering maximum value to our members and business for a smarter future.

The product development team is a key part of ClubLabs. We are responsible for delivering prioritized stories that look to maximize value for our members and our business through our digital products. We pair program, all day, every day because we know it delivers remarkable results. We practice test driven development because it produces high-quality, reliable and more maintainable code. We deliver user value, solve problems and ship code multiple times a day to improve our members’ experience and maximize value to the organization.

The Associate Software Engineer position requires foundational knowledge of software engineering concepts and a willingness to learn from others. You'll work alongside experienced engineers, contribute to an agile team, participate in changes, help understand what to build, and learn to plan ahead.

A great collaborator and a fast self-learner with developing problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, this role will contribute to evaluating requirements and learn how to take complex problems, redefine them, re-scope them, and transform them into simple solutions.

You'll help keep the team's progress visible, get to "Done", and contribute to test and development through iterations to implement quality code. Listen to people, gather feedback, and deliver results. Participate in Retrospectives and contribute to continuous improvements.

As our Associate Software Engineer, you will help us develop, test, enhance, and debug various member-facing applications on our website and mobile platforms. We currently have teams working on chatbots, self-service portals, login pages, sales and payment functions, and many other things in between. Your work here has an immediate impact on the ease of use for our 17 million members.

What You'll Do

  • Every day you will begin with a standup to share your progress on your story so far, discuss any roadblocks you're facing, and make a plan to continue the work.

  • Working in pairs, you will complete your story for the week. We do weekly iterations instead of sprints, and our stories are prioritized and pulled from a Kanban board.

  • Using Visual Studio Code, Javascript/Typescript, Node.js, React, and AWS, you and your partner will fix a quick production issue, develop a new feature, or build something brand new.

  • As an associate engineer, you'll spend time each day learning from more experienced team members. You'll ask questions, seek feedback on your code, and grow your skills so that you can take on increasingly complex work overtime.

  • In addition, this role is expected to participate in an on-call rotation, shared among the team. We keep it balanced and manageable.

What You'll Need

  • You have recently completed a degree in Computer Science or a related field, or you have about a year of professional software development experience. Internships, co-ops, or personal projects that demonstrate your ability to build software also count.

  • You're eager to learn and open to feedback. You can describe a time when you received constructive criticism and used it to improve your work.

  • You have foundational knowledge of software engineering concepts—things like version control, testing, and debugging. Exposure to cloud computing, front-end or back-end development, or system design is a plus.

  • You work with integrity and enjoy collaboration and are comfortable in a hybrid work environment.

  • You have some familiarity with Agile concepts or are ready to learn them.

  • You expect to participate in daily standup meetings, you'll complete your stories during our weekly iterations, and you're ready to meet frequent deployment deadlines.

The starting pay range for this position is:

$80,100.00 - $107,000.00

Additionally, for full time positions, you will be eligible to participate in our incentive program based upon the achievement of organization, team and personal performance.
