Job Description

Join Amgen’s Mission of Serving Patients

At Amgen, our mission to serve patients living with serious illnesses drives everything we do. As Amgen expands its technology and innovation presence in Hyderabad, this role will be pivotal in building a high-performing Computational Biology and Translational Analytics team and accelerating drug development through rigorous science, data, and responsible AI.

What You Will Do

Amgen is establishing a Computational Biology team at AIN Hyderabad to scale translational and reverse translational analysis across clinical programs in Oncology, Inflammation, Rare Disease, Cardiovascular & Metabolic, and Obesity & Related Diseases. The Associate Director for Computational Biology will be accountable for building the organization, hiring and developing talent, and delivering scientific and technical leadership across translational analytics, and AI-enabled platform capabilities while operating effectively in a global, highly matrixed environment. The position will report into US-based, PMED Computational Biology management.

This leader will create and run an integrated site model that is also fully integrated with the global organization and with the following sub-functions:

  • Data Engineering (via a Tech Lead): Ingestion, ETL, QC, and scalable pipelines for GxP clinical biomarker, omics, and imaging data in an integrated, AI-ready, regulated F.A.I.R. data and metadata environment with near-future agentic integration

  • Bioinformatics & Bioinformatics AI Engineering (via a Tech Lead): High-throughput cloud-based workflows for genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, multi-omics (including spatial), modern ML/AI (including foundation models and agentic patterns), and emerging modalities. Bioinformatics processing of data generated using a broad range of assay platforms and technologies.

  • Computational Biology Data Science (directly led): Predictive and deep learning, analytics stacks integrated with translational data environment, generative and agentic infrastructure enabling the precision medicine data and analysis platform

  • Biomarker Analysis Scientists (directly led): Program-facing translational analyses supporting assets across therapeutic areas including assessment of target engagement, time-series pharmacodynamic modeling, inference of mechanism of action, patient impact expansion and more.

Key Responsibilities

Site and capability build-out

  • Stand up the AIN Hyderabad Computational Biology organization, including hiring strategy, role calibration, onboarding, culture, and operating model.

  • Collaborate and coordinate continuously, reporting into the Global Computational Biology organization within Precision Medicine and maintaining regular touch-points with management and key stakeholders

  • Establish clear module ownership, delivery standards, and interfaces across Hyderabad and global teams; rapidly iterate as responsibilities mature.

  • Build a high-performance culture grounded in scientific rigor, humility, adaptability, and speed-to-learning, with a strong bias to measurable delivery.

Scientific and translational leadership

  • Provide scientific leadership for translational and reverse translational analytics across clinical trials, including biomarker interpretation, patient stratification hypotheses, mechanism-of-action support, and evidence-generation plans.

  • Guide Biomarker Analysis Scientists in study design, analysis strategy, interpretation, and communication of results for governance, program teams, and senior decision forums.

  • Ensure analysis approaches align with clinical development realities (endpoints, trial design, operational constraints, quality, traceability, and auditability).

Data, technology, and responsible AI leadership

  • Own site-level delivery for high-quality, analysis-ready data products (omics, biomarkers, imaging), including QC frameworks and scalable workflow execution.

  • Partner with platform, information systems, and governance stakeholders to ensure robust, compliant, and secure development and deployment of analytics and AI solutions.

  • Drive modernization of analytics using advanced ML/AI, including foundation models and agentic workflows, with responsible AI practices (validation, monitoring, documentation, and controls).

Stakeholder management and enterprise influence

  • Operate as a trusted leader with cross-functional stakeholders across Global Development and Precision Medicine; proactively seek context and bridge gaps across time zones and teams.

  • Communicate with clarity and executive presence; translate complex analytics into actionable insights, including uncertainty, limitations, and decision implications.

  • Represent Hyderabad capabilities in governance and strategy discussions; build credibility through consistent delivery, quality, and partnership.

Basic Qualifications

We are seeking a leader who brings the following minimum qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (PhD strongly preferred; MS with substantial experience considered) in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Engineering, or a related quantitative discipline.

  • 16+ years (or equivalent) of progressive experience in industry (biopharma/biotech/healthcare) delivering translational bioinformatics or computational biology in the context of drug development.

  • 7+ years of people leadership experience, including hiring, performance management, coaching, and building multi-disciplinary teams.

  • Demonstrated experience supporting clinical trial translational analytics (biomarkers, patient stratification, multi-omics integration, imaging/derived phenotypes, or related).

  • Proven track record delivering in a highly matrixed global organization with significant time-zone separation.

  • Superior written and verbal communication in English, including executive-ready materials and scientific storytelling.

  • Flexibility and adaptability to operate across global time zones.

Preferred Qualifications

The ideal candidate will also have many of the following:

  • Demonstrated ability to stand up a new site or scale a capability center in India (or similar global hub), including operating model design and talent strategy.

  • Deep familiarity with multi-omics at scale (for example, single-cell and bulk transcriptomics, proteomics, epigenomics, spatial omics, fragmentomics) and biomarker development practices.

  • Strong understanding of data engineering patterns for regulated and GxP-compliant R&D environments (metadata standards, provenance, reproducibility, audit trails, QC gates, and validated pipelines).

  • Proven experience designing and deploying ML/AI solutions in production for biomedical applications, including foundation models/LLMs and agentic workflow patterns.

  • Experience with responsible AI governance in an R&D context (evaluation, monitoring, documentation, privacy/security controls, and change management).

  • Comfort working with modern compute ecosystems (cloud and/or HPC), containerization, workflow orchestration, and collaborative software engineering practices.

  • Recognized ability to influence senior stakeholders, shape strategy, and drive decisions under ambiguity.

What Will Set You Apart

  • Ability to recruit and ramp a high-caliber team quickly while maintaining a high talent bar.

  • Credible translational science that stands up in governance, including clear articulation of uncertainty and limitations.

  • Track record modernizing analytics through scalable platforms and responsible adoption of generative and agentic AI.

  • Comfort navigating ambiguity with humility and adaptability, without sacrificing accountability or delivery standards.

Additional Information

  • This position is expected to play an active role in hiring and establishing the Hyderabad team and operating model.

  • Work may involve collaboration across US/EU/Asia time zones and occasional travel.
