Assistant Supervisor
Job Description:
Incumbent provides onsite operational leadership, trains and monitors staff performance, inspects work, and is responsible for ensuring compliance with established City standards.
May need to respond to after-hours calls and coordinates emergency responses as needed.

TYPICAL DUTIES
- In supervisors' absence, prepares payroll documentation, reviews and approves employee leave requests, assists with timekeeping compliance, and complete supervisor duties in their absence which may include representing the Department on specific items/projects.
- Assists in scheduling, instructing, training and evaluating subordinates regarding accuracy, procedures, processes, safety procedures and maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Supervising daily and seasonal work and provides on-site guidance, mentorship and performance feedback to staff.
- Recommends operational changes in priorities, resources, or staffing to meet district objectives.
- Reads and interprets blueprints, plans, and project specifications to ensure all work meets Salt Lake City standards.
- Performs maintenance procedures as needed. Conducts regular site inspections to verify safety, quality, and compliance across multiple parks, facilities, and landscaped areas.
- Operates and oversees the safe use of heavy equipment and vehicles including loaders, backhoes, sweepers, tampers, and mowers. Verifies that all equipment is properly maintained to optimize workflow.
- Works with Supervisor and maintains documentation on performance of assigned employees and solves performance problems in accordance with established guidelines. Make recommendations to supervisor regarding personnel actions, including performance evaluation, rewards, recognition, disciplinary actions, budgetary matters, equipment needs, etc.
- Monitors and tracks material and supply requisitions; assists in procurement and inventory management. Submits and tracks work orders, vandalism reports, safety incident reports, and equipment maintenance logs.
- Monitors fixed assets to ensure accountability and accurate recordkeeping.
- May collaborate with other City departments, public agencies, private contractors and/or community partners to arrange projects, implement plans, or to resolve operational concerns.
- Performs other duties as necessary.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School diploma or equivalent, and four (4) years of related experience with a minimum of two (2) years in a supervisory or lead capacity. Related work experience or formal education may be substituted one for the other on a year-for-year basis.
- Ability to assist in training; determine the most efficient method of performing assigned work; and coach and counsel employees to improve performance and provide feedback to management.
- Working knowledge of landscape maintenance including fertilizers, watering systems, herbicides, and standard mowing and planting practices. Experience in snow and ice removal techniques, procedures, and equipment to ensure public access and safety.
- May need experience safely working in public right of way, including trash and recycling management, exterior cleaning chemicals, cleaning of hard surfaces and graffiti removal.
- May be required to obtain State of Utah, Department of Agriculture Noncommercial Pesticide Applicators License within 6 months of hire.
- May be required to have a valid CDL class A driver’s license with trailer endorsement or able to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Moderately heavy physical activity. May push, pull or lift medium or heavy weights. Difficult working conditions. This position requires field work with exposure to inclement weather conditions and exposure to occupational hazards such as disagreeable elements, heat, cold, dampness, fumes, and noise.
- Frequent exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.
