Assistant Professor of the Practice, Social Work

Job Description:

Position Summary

The Department of Social Work in the School of Education and Human Development at Fairfield University invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor of Practice. This is a non-tenure track faculty position with primary responsibility for teaching (course load is 4 classes per semester) and student advising and mentoring. While the primary instructional assignment is within the BSW program, there may be opportunities to teach selected courses in the MSW program, depending on departmental needs and faculty expertise.

Primary Responsibilities

Teaching & Student Engagement

  • Teach undergraduate courses in the BSW curriculum.

  • Provide academic advising and mentoring to BSW students, supporting professional identity development and preparation.

  • Engage in curriculum development and pedagogical innovation aligned with best practices in social work education and Fairfield University’s Jesuit mission.

  • As appropriate, contribute to teaching in the MSW program based on departmental needs and faculty expertise.

Service & Collaboration

  • Participate in departmental, school, and university service activities.

  • Collaborate with faculty across programs and disciplines to support interdisciplinary learning and shared initiatives.

  • Contribute to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts within the department and School of Education and Human Development.

  • Opportunity for future administrative responsibilities

Qualifications

Required

  • Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from a CSWE-accredited program.

  • Eligibility for social work licensure (e.g., LMSW/LCSW) in the state of CT or ability to obtain licensure.

  • Significant post-MSW professional practice experience, with demonstrated leadership or supervisory responsibilities.

  • Experience teaching in higher education or a strong record of professional training and supervision relevant to undergraduate social work education.

  • Evidence of a relational approach to working with students and colleagues

Preferred

  • Doctoral degree in social work

  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive pedagogy and student-centered learning.

Professional Competencies

  • Strong organizational, communication, and collaborative teamwork skills.

  • Commitment to the values and ethics of the social work profession.

  • Alignment with Fairfield University’s Jesuit Catholic mission and dedication to educating students for leadership and service

Appointment Information

  • Full-time academic-year appointment.

  • Non-tenure track Assistant Professor of Practice rank.

  • Primary assignment in the BSW program, with possible MSW teaching opportunities.
