Position Description

The Department of Medicine of McGill University invites applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff as a Clinician-Teacher at the rank of Assistant Professor (Clinical) based at the St. Mary’s Hospital. This is a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The St. Mary’s Hospital Centre has more than 280 beds and includes a large family medicine group, an active emergency department, specialized medicine, plastic surgery and oncology programs that provide a stimulating work environment and opportunities for collaboration.

As a Clinician-Teacher, the successful candidate’s major non-clinical focus will be on teaching the next generation of physicians. Teaching activity will include both didactic and clinical teaching.

The successful candidate will be expected to work as the primary dermatologist for a community teaching hospital. Clinical responsibilities will include consultation in the emergency department, consultation on medical and surgical wards, and access to clinic time in the outpatient department, including access to a procedural room. As clinic time and resources are limited, the hospital will encourage the candidate to foster their own outpatient practice if they choose. As well, associate status with another hospital in the McGill network is highly favored to allow collegial interchange and academic advancement.

The successful candidate will also be expected to assume a leadership role in overseeing dermatology teaching at both the hospital and the CIUSSS level. They will be expected to be actively involved in organizing and improving the quality of teaching of medical students and postgraduate medical trainees from internal medicine, general internal medicine, and especially, in the family medicine program.

The successful candidate will have opportunities to expand their expertise in medical education across different specialties and build links with other McGill institutions.  The incumbent will be expected to develop and promote clinical innovation in the Division of Dermatology and is expected to contribute to clinical research and quality improvement activities to advance medical practice at the St. Mary’s Hospital.

The incumbent will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents and involvement in academic and administrative committees).

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Hold an MD degree and must have completed specialty training in Dermatology;
  • Be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (or equivalent) in Dermatology;
  • Be eligible for licensure in Quebec and certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec;
  • Have at least one additional year of clinical and/or research training is required, preferably in Medical Education;
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills are essential;
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
