The Assistant Director of Student Success Analytics is responsible for leading and conceptualizing a new area focused on advanced analytics and reporting of student data across multiple complex structured and unstructured data systems and domains (admissions; enrollment; financial aid; courses; degree audit systems (e.g., Stellic); LMS Carmen/Canvas; student outcomes such as retention, graduation, and persistence, degree completion; career preparation and outcomes data; and faculty/instructor data from Workday).This leadership role is pivotal in supporting the institution's strategic priorities outlined in the Academic Excellence Plan aiming to foster an environment conducive to student success and thriving through data-driven insights and recommendations. The Assistant Director of Student Success Analytics is responsible for leading and conceptualizing advanced statistical modeling, predictive analytics, projections, forecasting, data mining, mixed-methods research (quantitative and qualitative), machine learning, learning analytics to guide strategic planning, policy formation, decision-making, and enhance institutional effectiveness and business operations across the university.  The role is responsible for working collaboratively with executive leaders, faculty, and key stakeholders to understand and design complex analytical approaches around student success and learning and communicating insights to fuel strategic decision-making through reports, visually appealing interactive dashboards, presentations, storytelling and meaningful dialogue. The Assistant Director of Student Success Analytics will design and lead rigorous data and analytics to understand the effectiveness of interventions designed to enhance student success and learning and other areas of the Academic Excellence Plan. Responsible for leading the Senior Student Success Analytics and Assessment Specialist, Senior Data Analytics Specialist, and graduate research assistants which entails conducting performance management, mentoring and professional development, project management and guidance on advanced statistical procedures, making pay and employment decisions.  Collaboration across the university is a key aspect of the daily responsibilities, particularly in the areas of institutional effectiveness, advanced analytics, and institutional research and reporting, and analysts working in other campus areas in Student Life, Strategic Enrollment Management, and Office of Digital Innovation and Technology (OTDI). The position reports to the Assistant Vice President of Institutional Research and Reporting within the office of Institutional Research and Planning and works closely with the Assistant Vice Provost of Student Academic Excellence.  

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required in education, statistics, mathematics, psychology, or a related field, with specialized training in statistics, data analytics and quantitative research methodologies.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in a data and analytics -focused role in education, proven track record of conducting advanced statistical analyses managing large-scale, high impact data analytics projects.
  • Advanced expertise and experience and knowledge of programming languages such as SQL, R or Python required.
  • Deep knowledge of data visualization and reporting tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) to effectively communicate research findings.
  • Demonstrated ability to extract and model student data from multiple sources and datasets (admissions; enrollment; financial aid; courses; degree audit systems (e.g., Stellic); LMS, student outcomes such as retention, graduation, and persistence, degree completion; and career preparation and outcomes data).  
  • Demonstrated experience creating insights via advanced statistical analysis techniques using large data sets, preferably in higher education setting.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be customer service focused and be committed to being a strategic partner in providing data analysis for strategic planning, decision support, and work to enhance data literacy/fluency across OSU.
  • Expertise in managing institutional research and advanced analytical projects from inception to completion, effective project management, ensuring compliance with accrediting bodies, ethical standards and institutional policies, and maintaining high standards of data integrity and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other researchers and analysts within the same department and cross functional teams.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, documentation, with the ability to oversee multiple projects simultaneously and deliver results within tight deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of leading and mentoring others, working collaboratively with diverse teams and communicating technical content to non-specialist audiences.
  • Experience in using AI and Gen AI tools ethically and as appropriate to augment work, coding, cleaning datasets, data extraction, and analytics.

Desirable Skills:

  • Background in educational policy, program evaluation, or a related field, with insights into accreditation processes and quality assurance.
