What you'll do:
The Apprentice Mechanic assists Supply Chain Distribution Centre (DC) Mechanics in a variety of mechanical activities under the guidance of a licensed Mechanic. With this guidance, they must be able to identify, repair and troubleshoot a variety of DC equipment, and complete all assigned work in a quality fashion, on-time and in a safe manner. New Apprentices require working knowledge and understanding of using and handling basic mechanical repair equipment and tools, with increasing expectations as they progress through the Apprenticeship. They also need working knowledge and understanding of basic mechanical equipment and operation.

- Respond to breakdowns on equipment/systems in a timely manner based on set priorities
- Complete work in a timely manner, managing their time effectively, and pass along relevant hand-over information to incoming Trades
- Complete all tasks satisfactorily per departmental standards, entering all work order information in Computerized Maintenance Management System (Maximo)
- Adhere to policies and procedures for parts & materials inventory control
- Assist in various solutions to equipment problems and make recommendations to address/improve
- Demonstrate flexibility in an ever-changing environment
- Attend Ministry of Colleges & Universities job training, and other Canadian Tire-related training while achieving satisfactory grades
This is a 5-year full-time (We/Th/Fr) 7pm-7am role
Trade-Specific (Under the Guidance of Licensed Mechanic):
- Troubleshoot mechanical equipment & systems using schematics, detailed drawings or manufacturer’s specifications
- Install, repair and maintain industrial machinery and equipment
- Read blueprints, diagrams and schematic drawings to determine work procedures
- Dismantle and move stationary industrial machinery and mechanical equipment such as conveyors, sorters and racking according to plans, using hand and power tools
- Operate hoisting and lifting devices such as cranes, jacks and lift trucks tractors to position machinery and parts during the installation, set-up and repair of machinery
- Inspect and examine machinery and equipment to detect and investigate irregularities and malfunctions
- Install, troubleshoot and maintain power transmission, conveyor, hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- Adjust machinery and repair or replace defective parts
- Operate machine tools such as mills, lathes and grinders to fabricate parts required during overhaul, maintenance or set-up of machinery
- Clean, lubricate and perform other routine maintenance work on machinery
- Use hand and power tools and welding equipment
What you bring:
- Able to respond to and work under operational pressures and repair equipment with minimum downtime
- Able to develop or improve repair procedures for new & different makes/models of equipment & systems using service manuals
- Ability to work in close quarters, awkward positions and heights of up to 100 feet
- Moderate to heavy lifting requirements up to 44 lbs in variety of positions
- Demonstrated ability to work alone and self-start, and work cooperatively as part of a team
- Conform to all corporate policies and procedures
- Carry out duties and respond to same on a daily basis in a timely manner, meeting departmental standards on productivity, quality of work and safety
- Work cooperatively and collaboratively under the guidance of licensed Mechanic
- Ensure safe operating condition of equipment & systems to design specifications or better
- Work as team member and individually when required
- Effectively communicate all job-related and equipment-related information to Coordinator, Mechanic mentor, Planners, Inventory Control Clerks, Department Manager and Operations contact as required
- Ensure all relevant job or work order information is entered in CMMS (Maximo)
- Work in professional manner at all times with other Maintenance Employees/staff, Operations employees and external contractors or suppliers
- Work diligently at outside schooling and training, obtaining passing grades (minimum passing grade of 60%) as required by Canadian Tire
- Demonstrated skills, interest and experience in electrical-related or mechanically-related areas, exhibiting a satisfactory degree of related technical knowledge & experience
- Demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written)
- Able to pass written aptitude test
- Able to pass hands-on technical aptitude test
- Must be able to work at heights of 100 feet
- Able to stand for long periods with occasional laying, stooping and crouching, plus frequent heavy lifting
- Able to work in team-based environment
Internal Candidates:
- Attendance and performance (including quality of work, productivity and safety) meets or exceeds department standards
- Completion or enrolment in the Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program at an approved Ontario College an asset
- Completion of Canadian Apprenticeship in a recognized industrial trade (e.g., Industrial Electrician, Powered Lift Truck Technician, Industrial Machinist) is an asset
External Candidates:
- Completion of Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program with a minimum 60% passing grade or enrolment in Apprenticeship Program at an approved Ontario College
- Completion of Canadian Apprenticeship in a recognized industrial trade (e.g., Industrial Electrician, Powered Lift Truck Technician, Industrial Machinist) with a minimum 60% passing grade is an asset
