What you’ll be doing:

This is both a business- and technology-focused role, spanning problems from designing reusable data products to serve the business's data needs, through to making recommendations for data engineers to optimise data pipelines.

It requires applying both engineering practices and business logic to raw data, to clean, transform and produce datasets fit for consumption and use by other business areas, data analysts and data scientists to suit defined use cases, and making them accessible and quickly understandable through documentation, metadata, observability, and training, to empower end users to answer their own analytics questions.

Who are you:

  • Strong data analytics background, including investigation into raw data via both SQL querying (any dialect) and Excel, report and dashboard production, and business recommendations based on the story told by the data. This ensures you understand the business questions that Analytics Engineers need to provide the data to answer.
  • Experience automating reporting processes and using BI/reporting platforms to present data for self-service consumption
  • Experience designing and building new datasets to service specific data needs, applying critical considerations like efficiency, definitions, granularity, naming conventions, keys and indexes, etc.
  • Ability to deconstruct larger problems into smaller steps and understand the dependencies between them
  • An understanding of data quality concepts such as completeness, correctness, validation, and recency
  • Ability to adjust to new languages or environments as we evolve our data capability and explore new technologies and solutions
  • Experience and desire to fully and completely document data to make it instantly usable by the widest audience possible
  • Strong communication skills and ability to explain complex technical details to non-technical stakeholders
  • Willingness and drive for continuous development of both own skills and the data capability of the business
  • Interest in exploring new technologies in the data industry
  • Insurance industry experience would be considered an advantage
  • Familiarity or experience with the following technologies or similar would be considered a significant advantage: dbt, Google BigQuery, GCS, Google Dataplex
  • Familiarity with any of the following concepts would be considered an advantage: version control (GitHub), end-to-end testing, data contracts and cataloguing, data access controls and security
