A Brief Summary of This Position:

This individual contributor role reports directly to the Engineering Director of North America Coatings.  This position is accountable for providing analytical results for production process chemical baths, developing, and implementing analytical laboratory procedures to support the manufacturing & process plans for new products/processes or changes to existing products/processes as required, and to research new equipment, methods and material in a continual cost reduction and quality improvement effort.  This position is also accountable for providing engineering support to the Coatings organization.

Essential Functions:

  • This role requires up to 10% travel domestically, including overnight stays.
  • Prepares both chemical analysis results as well as prescriptions for the sites to bring chemical concentrations into specification.
  • Originates formal laboratory and chemical improvements for existing methods and chemistry.
  • Investigates both problems and opportunities, and develops plans for solutions in line with economic, personnel, and environmental considerations.
  • Identifies opportunities to perform custom laboratory analysis for both internal Valmont divisions as well as external customers.

  • Safety is a critical responsibility for this role.
  • Ability to identify issues and take initiative to address them.
  • Communicate with engineering and site management: discuss issues, work/project status, and impediments hindering work.
  • Effectively communicate with multiple levels and functions within the company.
  • Identify new or supplemental equipment to support growth opportunities.
  • Collaborate with various Coating sites and personnel to remedy nonconformance’s of chemical baths.
  • Diligent work ethic to pay attention to details and maintain documentation for future reference.
  • Support global operations as needed.
  • Execute preventative maintenance of critical equipment and support spare part inventory management.

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 3+ years preferred relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated technical competence.
  • Previous experience with spectrophotometry, chromatography, and similar equipment.
  • Experience conducting titrations and interpretation of results.
  • The ability to manage tasks and provide direction to managers & development teams.
  • The ability to work independently and to travel approx. 10% of the time, as needed.
  • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years preferred relevant experience.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in a galvanizing or related field.

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is performed in a laboratory setting and out on the operations floor.  The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.    Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, manipulate, handle, feel, and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various laboratory equipment.  The employee is occasionally required to move about the office.  The employee is also required to be able to move about Coatings plant sites and around equipment at those sites.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and positions, keyboard location and height and proper wrists rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds in working with large files, binders, laboratory and computer equipment.  The incumbent is also required to travel domestically 10% on an annual basis.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
