The Role: Analyst, South Asia Power and Renewables Research

The Team: Energy-CERA seeks an analyst for power and renewable market research for South Asian countries.

The South Asia Power and Renewable Research group operates within the broader APAC research team, which is part of the Global Power team under CERA. The team provides forward-looking market analysis and delivers actionable insights to clients through written reports, presentations, and direct engagement with clients.

The Impact: This position supports the new and existing research & analysis, and power modeling activities. He/she will be responsible to produce accurate, timely, analytical deliverables and provide valuable market insight and analytics to support our clients. As researcher for South Asia, you will be covering content on South Asian power and renewables markets. This includes topics such as policy, regulation, market reforms, trends and forecasts, and market modeling. Furthermore, the position requires coordinating market insights with the Global Gas and Power team and engaging local clients on relevant topics.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead power market modeling activities in South Asia region using PLEXOS Models (Covering one or more markets from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan)
  • Structure model scenarios and sensitivity cases in collaboration with different teams
  • Daily/ monthly tracking of power and renewable websites to configure and maintain database for modeling / forecast
  • Responsible for publication of data tables and market dashboards for power & renewables for South Asian countries
  • Do power project tracking for the South Asia countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka)
  • Support international team for timely data feeds on the power project database for South Asia region and adhoc support for other regions as and when required
  • Work with research team to support on database consolidation and data verification required for research/consulting deliverables
  • Maintain and develop large databases around power and renewable markets, assets, PPAs, project performance etc.
  • Represent SPGI in events - webinars, energy briefings, forums, seminars/ conferences and ability to build network

What We’re Looking For:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Graduate/ Post-graduate (Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Operational research, Energy policy etc.), with less than 3 years of experience.
  • Working knowledge of database tools / softwares like Python, VBA, excel macros etc.
  • High critical-thinking skills to evaluate the quality and relevance of the information.
  • Comfortable working with large data and large set of numbers
  • Good English communication skills, with the ability to effectively present forecasts and supporting materials to clients through reports, calls, emails, and live/web-based conferences.
  • A commercially driven mindset paired with excellent interpersonal skills for engaging with both internal teams and external clients.
  • Outstanding attention to detail, ensuring precision in research and deliverables.
  • A self-driven individual, excellent problem-solving abilities, with a demonstrated capacity to perform well under tight deadlines.
  • Desirable:
    • Knowledge of South Asia power and renewable energy markets, with understanding in areas such as power trading, market operations, data-base creation and policy-analysis.
    • Familiarity with complex energy modeling tools like PLEXOS, PROMOD, IPM, MARKAL/TIMES, LEAP (the Low Emissions Analysis Platform), GAMS, PyPSA, Aurora tools etc.
    • Familiarity with tools / softwares like MS Access, PowerBi, snowflake, ADW etc.
    • Working knowledge of various AI tools for research activities and use of AI prompts to automate repeat tasks.

This role is one of the primary role we need for conducting our PLEXOS modeling and forecasting exercise.  This role would take up the ownership of india PLEXOS model - keep it updated and prepare long-term forecasts. this forecast feeds into various deliverables across different teams. The person is also responsible for preparing assumptions and coordinating with different teams to finalize the assumptions.

Further, this person also acts as support to our various on-going report/project work. Some of the other key deliverables which will be also be impacted (i) India Power and renewable market profiles (Wholesale market) and (ii) South Asia LCOE assessment for 2 SA countries (India and Sri Lanka).
