Your Opportunity
One Permanent Full Time Position.
Capital Power is seeking a highly motivated and commercially minded individual to join our Supply & Trading (S&T) team as a Natural Gas Analyst. This is one permanent, full-time position based in Calgary.
S&T is responsible for managing and optimizing Capital Power’s North American merchant asset exposures across electricity, natural gas, and environmental products. Reporting to the Desk Head, West, this role provides quantitative, analytical, and commercial support to the Natural Gas portfolio.
The Analyst will focus on two primary objectives:
Deliver robust modeling and analytical support for Lower 48 and AECO natural gas markets.
Provide data-driven recommendations to optimize portfolio performance, including management of price risk, volume risk, and fuel supply optimization for Capital Power’s natural gas generation fleet.
This role requires close collaboration with internal cross-functional teams, external counterparties, agencies, and senior leadership.
You will contribute to our team by
Performing daily quantitative and fundamental analysis of gas markets, locational basis, transport, storage, weather, etc.;
Taking analytics, experience and other factors into account to formulate and analyze portfolio strategy to ensure Capital Power is optimizing risk and return;
Developing pricing models and tools;
Taking analytics, experience and other factors into account to formulate and analyze portfolio and trade strategy ensuring the most optimal risk-adjusted decisions.
What you will bring to the role
Education:
Minimum bachelor’s degree specializing in Statistics, Mathematics, Finance, Economics, Engineering or related field
Preference towards graduate degrees, CFA, FRM or other technical designation holders
Experience:
5+ years of demonstrated experience in analytics of natural gas trading and / or gas scheduling activity across North American Natural Gas markets with a focus on Henry Hub and AECO. Experience with other regions such as Midwest, East, and Gulf would be considered an asset;
Experience with physical gas, gas scheduling, asset optimization/hedging, structured products and options.
Demonstrated experience with management of large data sets, analytics and visualization.
Demonstrated experience in communication of complex issues concepts in a simple and concise fashion.
Technical Skills:
Advanced analytical and coding skills that can include SQL, R, Python languages is required.
Advanced application of AI tools to augment decision making / coding.
Advanced application skills related to MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, PowerBI).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to handle multiple tasks and work under pressure situations.
Working Conditions:
This is a Calgary in office- based role.
Relocation support will be provided if required.
Occasional intra-Alberta and Canadian/US travel may be required.
